I have been dying to field some plague marines ever since I started chaos over a year ago, and I am finally going to break out of my slaaneshi box and throw some nurgle on the table.
I wanted something creative, not death guard, or the cleaved (even though I love their look), etc. So i decided to start by changing the fly. Instead of revering the fly as a symbol of contagion, I wanted to use a Rat instead, and my army would be specifically tasked with spreading the Black Plague.
Therein lies the problem though. I can't figure out how to model a rat themed army. I have some ideas, like instead of using a DP model or a greater daemon, i was going to use this guy and use skaven for lesser daemons. I was also going to buy some rat models/swarms to use on a few plague marine bases. Beyond that I have next to nothing. I might use a few space wolves bitz for the fur to represent rats, but I don't know how else to get the point across.
I could really use help in picking a color scheme, preferably with a lot of black, as they are the marines of the Black Plauge. Also, any ideas for a way to do a simple symbol of a rat for their shoulder pads would be great.
interesting concept...using the space wolves idea, with them having 'wolf head' helmets, you could use, on one or two or watever, models, a skaven head as a helmet?? an idea
First off, Bloody good idea and rep to go with it. I rekon get a box of skaven and add parts to the marines as you see fit. Maybe even start wih a rat ogre as the basis for a dp. Maybe even use the smaller rats as wound markers on your multiwound models.
I think you could get away with using the skaven heads as helmets, if you use the cowled or helmeted heads. The clan rat box looks like it has a pretty good selection.
Marines with tails would look pretty cool as well
For the chapter badge, there is a skaven shields bitz pack which comes with 8 rat head symbols. Not sure on the size but they could be useful.
Good luck with your project and don't forget to show us some pics
If you measure up the size of the skaven head and are really adventurous you could probab ly hoolow them out to wear ontop o the nurgle heads. Lota work tho
looking at the space wolves bits right here you dirty up the look of the wolf heads, add tails to the marines etc. they would look ratty enough, so use the space wolf transfers and muddy them up a bit perhaps?
and I agree great idea on the theme. one way to do the paint job with mainly black would be black for the big plates, thighs, shins, forearms, inner shoulder pad, then the trim, outer shoulder pad, boots, kneepads, elbow pads, gloves, a kind of sick grenn, bordering on the borwn to stick with the rat idea? just a thought though....
Wow, thanks for all the suggestions. I appreciate the help.
For color scheme, I started experimenting with the black, brown and green. At first it looked okay, but then I took some of the black out and it looked better, and as I kept replacing the black, it started looking better and better. This is what I think I might do for the scheme I made the hands and feet pink to try to emulate rats, and I think it will work without being to weird, provided I don't use a really bright pink. So thanks, Reevan, for the color inspiration.
Shaantitus- I love the idea of using rats for wound markers. That is going to have to happen sooner or later.
I didn't mention it before, but with the space wolf helmets, I figured I could cut some plasticard rats teeth and glue them onto the front of the wolf helmet to make it look more like a rat. Also, there are a bunch of fur covered bits in that set, like a shoulderpad, and a fur cod piece (kinky), and all of those hanging things that look like rabbits feet.
OH! and one last thing. They have a name now. Let me know if you guys think its too corny: The Bubonic Bretheren
alliteration. nice. I think the idea is very good. The pink for the hands and legs if done right will be amazing. if you make it a mix of pink and brown, kind of like heavy stubble covering it(as not to make it too pink) it'd tie in with the other colours fairly well. and great idea with the helmets.
So I know I haven't updated lately. I don't have pics because the models I ordered are lost in the mail. I did however, stumble across great potential for a conversion here.
I figure that if I sculpt fur where the horns should be, use scratch built rat tails instead of the ones on the sprue, and make plasitcard rat teeth for the hounds, then they can serve as great mounts for a squad of T6 nurgle bikers.
I looked at the Chaos Warhounds as possible mounts for my Thunderwolf Cavalry. Unfortunately when you look at the actual sprue, their hindquarters are really short meaning it would be hard to fit a marine on there comfortably.
Well if you could, you could even try to sculpt some rats out of green stuff and have them scampering in and out of tanks or armor recess, just an idea.
Love plague marines by the way, loved em' so much i made an entire army of em'
