Allied HQ much more expensive than Parent HQ?

I spend more time thinking up strange army configurations than actually playing the game. One reason is I'm a modeler, not really a player, but I need some sort of reason to buy the models I want to convert, otherwise the GF would go through the roof.

Anyway I was looking at an interesting painting technique in an old WD, and it's something I'd like to try on a new army. Added to that I saw a very fortuitious picture that gave me a wicked idea for a set of conversions.

Now I'd like to build (another) new chapter, the problem is I don't want to be left without some seriously cool main characters. Now I don't want to collect ANOTHER say, Ultramarine army, just painted in a different colour scheem. So I've come up with a plan.

To get a "main" character I was to include a Grey Knight Hero, possibly a Grand Master to get something besides an expensive normal Marine.

But I'd have to include him as an Ally because I don't want a Grey Knight army. Got one. So you throw in a little "min/maxing". Buy the parent HQ as something cheap and leave it as that. So you end up with a list looking something like :

HQ : Parent List : Captain, Bolt P, CCW
HQ : Allies : Uber squad of death - Grand Master Nemisis FW, SB, 2x Terminators TH, SS, 1x Term Psycannon.

And the rest of the list from the Parent list?

I've been looking through the Codecies and I can't find anywhere where it says the Allies can't be more expensive than the Parent HQ.

Looking at it from a "Can it be justified from a 40K fluff" point of view, well thats easy. An Uber squad of death has been dispatched by the Ordo Malleus to make sure the Marines fix a problem.

Looking at it from a modelling point of view I can give the units some very elaborate paint styles. They are like the Grey Knights, only not. There are also a myrriad of opportunities for the conversions I want to do, with the number of Combat shields and Storm Shields I can put in the force. I also get to create a "new" chapter simlpy by borrowing from the Coxed Marines, yet I can tailor make the chapter commander.

From a gamers point of view. The rank and file lack the Aegis and the Nemisis weapons, but this is traded for equipment flexibility and numbers. Drawback will be against Daemons. They get the sustained attack rule thanks to the Grey Knights, but I lack the tailor made anti daemon weapons the Daemon hunters normally field.

Would you guys play against and army that was set up like this? I do realise it has some drawbacks, but I personally think it'd make a pretty wicked army. I'm going to base this example on the standard Marines, but I'm thinking of using a Black Templar army in the final version.

I would have absolutely no problem with playing an army set out in that way. I'd suggested finding pts for a more fleshed out parent hq as otherwise its almost a waste. A libby with fury? or a jumppacking chaplain. both of these can get great modelling oppertunities. Black templars sound like they go with your idea well, as it will suit them have shields and stuff everywhere

Nothing says your allied units have to be cheaper

Just bear in mind that having even that ONE GK unit means following the GK rules, including the whole 'demons get sustained attacu rules' thing.

Before somebody says you can't use psykers with Black Templars, Grey Knights are a codified exception.

You aren't maximising the efficiency of your Grey Knight close-combat team. Since you say their goal is to obliterate combat, give them two Incinerators (instead of one Psycannon), allowing you to deal more obscene damage up close. Give them the Holocaust power to further allow them to utterly annihilate anything short of Sv3+. Between that and your two Incinerators, you can't get blocked by rank-and-file troopers. You can't be stopped by anything huge, since the Grand Master is nearly specifically designed to wipe out big tough things. All they can do to stop you is rush you with high-end combat specialists, which will still probably lose in most cases. This way, your opponent can't afford to let the squad run riot, but will be unable to stop it without some very heavy-duty firepower. If you're willing to go to hyperbole, get another half-dozen terminators and a Land Raider Crusader as a Heavy Support choice, and if your opponent loses his cool, you've won.

This doesn't work against high-density armies in the slightest.

Thanks for the replies. I hadn't really thought what I'd kit the group out with, it's just a thought process at the moment.

Galahad : I do realise that the Grey Knights allow the sustained attack rule for the daemons, something my poor army will have to just suck up and deal with.

Jigplums, I don't WANT a strong army leader. I want the allied force leader to be the thorn in the enemies side. I want to spend as few points on my force commander as I possibly can. It IS a waste, but you have to be use the Parent list for the HQ according to the allies rules. I'd happily NOT have a leader at all.

But being able to field a squad of Grey Knights makes for a very fluffy chapter commander. Look my dude is a psyker, wearing very ornate armour, and armed with a force weapon. What can your chapter commander do again?

This is mainly an excuse to allow my converting and painting ideas to come through.
