Dying it putting it very strongly, MMO subscriber stats are like this

World of Warcraft 12,000,000 (2011)
Aion - 3,400,000 (mid 2010)
Runescape 1,300,000 (2009)
Lineage 750,000 (2009)
Lineage II 750,000 (2009)
Dofus 520,000 (mid 2010)
Final Fantasy XI 350,000 (mid 2010)
Eve Online 325,000 (2011)
Lord of the Rings Online 210,000 (mid 2010)
City of Heroes/Villains - 125,000 (2009)
Age of Conan 120,000 (mid 2010)
Ultima Online - 100,000 (2009)
Everquest - 100,000 (mid 2010)
Warhammer Online 80,000 (2010)

Current reports are saying that WoW might have dropping to as low as 11 Million now. Even then WoW has 3 Million more subscribers than all the other top MMO's added together. Across all MMO's the Active Subscribed user base is about 21 Million, so half of all MMO players play WoW. Any MMO on the market would sell a kidney to be dying as badly as WoW.

If the Star Wars MMO get a million subscribers it will be doing exceptionally well.

Its true that WoW is still the King of MMOs, sadly, but hopefully once TOR is released it can be the start of WoW's removal from that position. Fact is WoW was once a serious mmo, and now it looks like a saturday morning cartoon for ten year olds. The cool villains are dead or soon-to-be-dead, the races all suck and the only cool profession is the Death Knight and to get that you've got to reach level 55 or something close.

WoW is not dying. Numbers are going down when next big MMO comes along and Old Republic will have a great impact but these WoW is dying things started back in 2007. And i havent played WoW after its first expansion pack didnt like direction they were heading. Graphics dont matter, gameplay only. Started 1999 playing MMO games and played or acted Guild Master in several over the years and true MMO players dont like WoW instant gratification direction that WoW took so shortly after release.

Any MMO game could be said as dying after year or two after its release, cause players change games. Only exception and possibly greatest MMO game on market EVE-online is total exception. Every second new release that seems to be coming out is yet another lvl-based, instant raiding, instant battleground/arena, fast/instant travel, easymode that everyone can go top lvl and stay there, then start complaining when things get boring and have to repeat things. Until next expansion comes along and sucks some of older playerbase back.

WoW did very good thing to older MMO audience when it released. It brought polish and accessibity that wasnt seen before and brought huge amount of players to MMO genre. But it started taking direction that made it less MMO in every update. Even Old Republic with its cartoony direction looks quite crystal but i still applaud my favourite MMO back in 2003 Star Wars galaxies. Until it was changed cause of WoW.. Biggest rape in MMO history so far. I would be happy to see WoW finally dwindle and go away, but we would see just too many similar kind of games released after it, without hardly going more hardcore direction.

You guys think that is bad.

This is what was the final nail in the coffin for me after 6 years of EQ2:

No lore, no explanation just a fucking flying squirrel.

It was a culmination of nerfs and poor decisions by SOE, then this finally made me quit this year.

First off, you should get your own facts straight then.

ACTIVE subs, of WoW are only around 5 million. their 12 million number they constantly claim are TOTAL subs that they have had over the years + the chinese / Korean servers which use a different system (FtP, PtW).

Point being, WoW currently only has 5 million subs, give or take. WoW will lose a good portion of their playerbase to SWTOR. They even expect this, and have shown it in their systems, through offering D3 for FREE with a 12 month sub to wow, and making WoW more 'kid friendly' by putting in POKEMON, and kung fu panda, to try and keep the under 13's and parents playing with thier children.

WoW is not dieing? my ass its not dieing. Blizzard is running around like a chicken with their heads cut off, trying to prevent a complete death of WoW at the hands of SWTOR.

Until now they have absorbed and survived. now Blizzard has even gone as far as basically requiring D3 to be given out for FREE to retain even a fraction of their player base.

just you watch, WoW will be done before their next expansion / I doubt there will be even a million purchaces of their new MMO.

WoW will be dying when they have server merges all over world. Currently they still have massive around of players to compare to any releases so far.

Old Republic could very well get million subscribers quite soon, even 2 million does sound about right. First 3 months of new MMO release is always the most critical period. We have seen plenty of so called WoW killers released last few years but all of them have soon quieted down and some people went back to WoW. Even though IP of Biowares new release is great, does it have enough stuff and new inventions to keep people playing it. We have seen few quite similarly polished products that WoW was during its release, but people went to this game claimed it was better than WoW and after few months of testing crawled back to their WoW characters.

Back in the day Everquest was no.1 raiding game in MMO environment and it took WoW few years to get enough content to drop it from its spot. Dark age of Camelot was and i think still is no.1 on its original form in terms of PvP made in fantasy environment. WoW at its release wasnt still defined as total raiding game and people waited alot of some meaningfull PvP. Then we got some kind of esport instant duel matches with separate rewards without affecting to outside world in any way. Open world PvP is really hard to do when you put people to side of horde or alliance. There comes server balance and its usually tipped one way or another. Daoc overcame this by introducing 3 sides and it worked. Even Sony's release of Planetside back in the day was more fun because of three-way battles. Im just afraid that Old Republic will fall to this same category.

WoW has to offer some new and more important upgrades for free finally, i wouldnt get less if its some hello kitty content if they can integrate it into game seamlessly. And WoW has always been quite animated and cartoony in terms of its graphics theme. Just look at Eve online, players never had to pay anything extra for updates and it has worked well.

WoW will eventually die off and Star Wars licence will have an impact to this, but its still too early to say. I would love that it puts some real cometion and makes WoW dev team to start making more content at faster rate into game, but we shall see. WoW currently is not dying, start of next year could show different.

I have played WoW, and I have played the beta of SWTOR.

now unless they completely fuck up the final polish of SWTOR with a few minor bugs I found, I cant see anyone who will take WoW over SWTOR save for parents and children.

There is reaching into the metaphorical gutter to get gameplay, and this is it. Borrowing elements from other games, that doesn't even fit in conceptually at all, is a very bad sign. And, not to mention, there's been lots of these for WoW for quite awhile. They're running on momentum, they'll crash eventually.

Writer of crappy fics, I hope you might derive some enjoyment from them.
