Mafia 2, a great story. Gameplay based on other things than just shooting people.

Now where's the fun in that?

Another single player game I enjoyed recently was Rage. I know many people that have mixed opinions of this game but I really enjoyed the single player experience. Though it got a bit repetitive at times. Still a top game and ID impressed me once again (granted it was NOTHING compared to Doom and Quake, though it did have some nice easter eggs in the game).

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Half-life or Portal yet.

When I was a young boy, I dreamed of being a baseball...

Best single player games (ignore most of the list if you don't like RPGs):

Old School (NES and SNES era):

Chrono Trigger (only game ever with a decent time travel story)
Final Fantasy VI (the "best" Final Fantasy)
Super Metroid
Legend of Zelda A link to the Past
Phantasy Star IV (Sega Genesis)
Dragon Warrior (series, nostalgia goggles may be required)

Slight Past (PS1/PS2, Xbox, Gamecube, Dreamcast, PC) Era:
Skies of Arcadia (dreamcast and port to Gamecube)
Suikoden (series, though I'd skip 4)
Castlevania SoTN (hell just play the whole series)
Resident Evil 4
Wild Arms (and it's remake Alter Code F)
Balder's Gate (series)
Knights of the Old Republic (hasn't withstood the test of time well)
Grandia (epic scale of a game)

Current Era (360, PS3, Wii, PC)
Metal Gear Solid 4
Mass Effect (1, 2, 3)
Borderlands (but it's great multiplayer as well)
Alpha Protocall
Dues Ex Human Revolution
Uncharted (series)
Batman Arkham (series)
Bastion (PC game on Steam)
