Default Space Marine: The I knew it/ Told you so edition.

So Space Marine is out and on the receiving end of some mixed and unloving reviews. The user score on the all-knowing Metacritic is 5/10 at the time of writing, and the best professional review being 80 with the lowest being 60.

I can't say I didn't see it coming.

Here's what one guy said:

Quote:
This isn't a spoiler but it kind of is at the same time. This game is basically shoot Orks that come right at you conveniently and then tap the melee button when they get to you. That's literally it, the extra weapons and accessories don't add any gameplay mechanics whatsoever, just change the nature of the button tapping.

You'll never have to think about what you're doing aside from pressing B on 1 in 10 stunned Orks. The writing and voice acting is cringeworthy and typical of everything you'll be used to and bored of if you're a 40K fan like me. This game could have been so much more (cover plays a big part in the tabletop game, it isn't unrealistic to prefer cover to AP3 weapons like Ork rokkits) but ultimately falls way short. Play the demo and you'll miss nothing from the full game.
And to add to the humiliation, some people managed to finish the whole game in as little as 5-6 hours. That is abysmal.

Now I know that there will be lots of people leaping to it's defense, for what ever reason, but be assured: I called it over a year ago! This game could never have been as good as we wanted.

I've had recurring nightmares
That I was loved for who I am
And missed the opportunity
To become a better man

I'm sitting here trying to understand something.

Why do people think that Space marine was going to be on the scale as Halo CE, Crysis, Deus ex, or Half life?

It's a third person shooter made by a company that makes RTS games, I for one was only expecting a hack and gorefest and that's what I got.

I don't regret purchasing it.

Yeah, I mean, anyone with half a brain knew this game was going to be pure bolter porn. That's what was expected. That's what was received. The focus is clearly on the online portion anyway.

Singleplayer is meh, i was hoping it would get better when chaos showed up but no... its still meh. The plot was completely predictable, and having the same 2 marines follow you around the game... and not include Co-op... Relic, Relic, Relic...

Multiplayer is where its really at, but with 2 modes and five maps, that free DLC (or any DLC) better get here soon if they want me to stick around. It's fun so far and surprisingly balanced, but variety is the spice of life, and battlefield 3 wants my money in a month. If the DLC machine doesn't start cranking by that time, to Gamestop it goes.

"If there is any primarch who should have never been found, its Lorgar. Why? Two words. Hours Hersey"
"It was a 1......why was it a 1!"
Yes, I do play orks, yes, I do have quite a few boys on the table, and yes, it does take me a while to move them...got a problem with that...

Neither do I. Am I unhappy to be seeing some people claim they beat the game in 5-6 hours? Yes I am. But unless they can prove to me otherwise, as far as I am concerned they did a speed run on easy and did not play to enjoy the game. They just 'played' so they could race to the finish and claim they did it before anyone else.

Now do I wish the story was better for what we got? No, not in the slightest. You are a space marine, and a space marine captain at that, I fully expected the story to be rather simple because you are playing as a weapon to stop monsters from getting really powerful weapons. I expected to be mowing through orks left, right, and center and for my actions to be rather blunt.

Do I have any complaints? Yeah. I hated only having two marine buddies with me until way late in the game. Fuck me, have us link up with them earlier and put the company champion in charge while you go and do that important thing; maybe even take a squad with you. I hated how the orks constantly refereed to you as space marine, when to them your just another humie, or a beakie, or one a da big unz, or something a little more inventive. Same goes for human NPC's always referring to you and others as Ultramarines.

A guard leuitenant is not going to call an astartes captain by his chapter. He/she will call him by his rank and maybe name if he/she is so fortunate. Most others are supposed to be calling them lord or marine or something. That one just got annoying as the game went on.

Oh well haven't you heard Reaper? This was apparently supposed to be gods gift to both 40k and video games. It was supposed to blow everyone and everything way out of the water, into orbit in fact.

Because, you know, a game where the player is a space marine who has answered a call for aid to stop orks from taking a world is going to be doing only a little bit of fighting..

The campaign of Space Marine is very good. The story is not the utter shit some games leave us with and the gameplay neither terribly over the top or hellishly complex. Could we do with a bit more variety? Yeah but thats why games these days have DLC, on top of getting more money from us.

The visuals in this game are what I was looking for above all else. The guardsmen reach the chest of your space marine, the buildings are gigantic and wide spaced where they should be and 'cramped' where they should be. I honestly stopped playing at one or two points to just take the scene in, like first sight of the titan in its bay. Those things stand at least eight to ten stories tall.

End of the day, could we have asked for more? Yes, but should we? No not really; not when you take into account the people who made it and what they normally make, who the player is playing as, and the given story.

Seriously, is it really that hard to write reviews without spoilers?

5-6 hours? That's 25-50% more then Call of Duty, so I'd call it a win for us.

Games are made to be short in this day and age, because every publisher has a new title coming out in a week so you can't spend 100+ hours playing the same game.

As to using metacritic user scores, you might as well not even bother. The people that review games on meta critic are NEVER impartial, as they have (generally) bought into the hype of the game and almost no game ever lives up to the hype. Plus they tend to lack an understanding on reviewing anything as they equate "I don't like this" to bad, which it may not be.

+rep on that.

That's the folly of having expectations for games. Inevitably people begin to heighten those expectations further and further until what they expect in a game isn't possible. Not every game can be a Dead Space 2, Halo 3 or Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Most games get scores of 60-80, it means the critics recognize it as a good game that has its flaws, and that is the majority of games.

This is a game about Space Marines fighting Orks and Chaos. And yet people were expecting an Academy Award worthy story. Its going to have lots of bolter porn because bolter porn is a big part of 40k, but as long as its enjoyable to play that is what really matters.

When I get a game all I ask is that I enjoy it. Apart from that I don't demand anything of my games, if they have a great story like Gears of War and Halo then great, if they have immersing gameplay and characters then great. But in the end all I want is to enjoy it.

I've played Deus Ex: Human Revolution once since i've gotten it, yeah once. I should get back to it but I just keep putting it off. And yet I have no doubts that I won't put Space Marine off. I'll play it and enjoy it, because that's why I play games.

And as to people completing the game in five or six hours, yeah i'm sure its possible, for people who speed play it. They skip every cutscene, look for the faster way out of a fight and don't bother with the actual gameplay, they just want to see how long it takes to finish. Which to me is utter BS, why buy a game just to finish it as fast as possible?

This is faulty reasoning at best. Games are short because the writing teams for CoD and Space Marine are pitiful compared to the effort put into the Graphics etc, the new Dues Ex suffers from the same thing, good graphics, short games. CoD is produced on the back of franchise, bad games are really meaningless there will still be people in camo queuing at midnight for it.

A lot of new game are a lot longer than these offerings and they're better for it really.

Space Marine is a bit of fun, some fluff, no one will be playing it 6 months from now really.
