Default My initial impression of 40k Space Marine

So, over the past weekend, while I was at Gencon Indy 2011, I had the chance to play 40K Space Marine. While I can't account for the games Story, I can give a full account of gameplay.

The "Demo" they had available to play starts you off in a building as the exit ramp extends down and you're left to cross what looks like a container yard. You have a choice of 4 weapons Bolter, Stalker Pattern Bolter (takes role of Sniper Rifle), Bolt Pistol (unlimited ammo), and a Astartes Grenade Launcher. You can use your Chain Sword with any gun buy hitting the correct button.

Combat, ah combat. You really feel like a god of battle while playing this game. Nothing except bosses can stand against you one on one, and everything knows it. Controls for using guns are very tight, though they are a little slow.

Melee combat has some issues, ones that are addressed with practice and maybe a tutorial. You health regens based on the finishing moves you use on your targets (all of which are insanely brutal) but they seem to only be usable if you stun the target first. The only stun move I was able to find was an AOE stun with knockback so it made getting the finishing move off rather hard, but still usable. This makes for a bit of a learning curve for some people, as I watched many players be killed within one minute as they couldn't regen health.

Movement is done very well, your character is fast, but not so fast that it seems unrealistic in terms of the fluff.

Graphics are very impressive for the game, coming up on AAA caliber titles but this always seems to be easier when the designers aren't going for flat out realism in their games. The environments are very well done, and the character models are very well detailed.

Music and Sound was done to my satisfaction, though at this point in gaming this shouldn't come as much of a surprise.

Overall I'd say the game is a solid 8.5/10 from what I played. Gameplay was solid up and down with no glaring flaws that I could notice. I'm now heavily looking forward to this game, not just as a 40K fan but as a gamer as well.

As a side note I got to talk with one of the Relic reps, it seems multiplayer will not be available at launch (most likely). This is due to several issues, including balancing, much to my disappointment. The good news is I was told multiplayer is on schedule to be released as a free "DLC" (I bet most files are on disc anyway) 2-4 weeks after the title launches. Somewhat disappointing, but I'd rather they release the multiplayer without any major flaws, even if it will take an extra 2-4 weeks.

good reviews all around for this game, and I could not be happier. it looks like the only thing they need to do is deliver on the story, and it will be worth the cash. Of corse jush smashing through orks would have done it for me. filthy xenos.

Yeah, I have to call you a lucky bastard as well, but thanks for giving a pretty good account of your experience. I'm definitely looking forward to this .

Thanks for that update on the game man! I was looking forward to it already but couldn't help but wonder if it would actually be any good. Hearing someone who has gotten some hands on time with the game say it rocks so far is music to my ears.

one thing I want is the ability to split my fire everywhere, it makes no sense that a squad of 10 guard or marines or whatever all have to fire at 1 target with everything, is the guy with the lascannon not smart enough to realize maybe he would be better off firing at the massive tank looming overhead instead of the little man no bigger than a squat running at him, or is that far too complex for the 10yr olds?
