The only problem with your theory is that every one of the games you just mentioned were First Person Shooters and had the most tenuous single RPG element ever. It wouldn't work at all.

I would have to agree that an FPS heavy MMO would not last very long. WHy waste 15 bucks a month playing an FPS when you can play one for free? The roleplaying aspect would just not be there if it was a frag fest. I would think they would go back and take a page out of Rogue Trader. I can't see how they are going to work it all out though, whatwith the fluff being the way it is. How is a Necron or Tyranid ever going to team up with anything? If they can't figure that out, then you've started limiting the field quite a bit. Sure you can cram the imperium together with Tau and Eldar on one side and force Chaos into a side with Orks Nids and Necrons, but then you've got some things that you'll not be able to explain very easily.

Edit- Now that I can get the page to work, I noticed they are calling it an MMOG, leaving the roleplaying part out. Ouch, that could easily mean that it will not contain the sort of deapth one would expect of an MMORPG. NO premature conclusions here, but they will be walking a tightrope. The otehr thing that botehred me was that they assume both MMO's will co-exist based on two wholly seperate audiences. I'm not as sure as they are since their likely subscriber base will mostlybe made up of those who not only know and like Warhammer but also like MMOG's. Then you split that group into two parts between the Warhammer and 40k mmo's? Sounds like they may have a hard time coming up with a big enough playerbase for both to me...

I'm stoked about it. I'm pretty sure they'll find a way to make it work nicely, and avoid the pitfalls of being just a FPD kind of game. I'm sure they've figured out a FPS all the time kind of game won't fly.

As was pointed out in another forum's discussion on it, people are still playing Unreal Tournament and Battlefield 2 and combat is all they are. I think they'll do something like FPS Guild Wars style maybe. That or pick up where Planetside left off.

You forget, though, that Unreal Tournament (and its descendants and spinoffs) were supreme examples of how to make a simplistic premise in to a fantastic game. If this game is half as good at what it does as the UT franchise, it'll do well.

Don't diss UT within my earshot. Ever.

I agree with uber. UT is simple. Think of the plot. A killing tournament. Ta-da, violence justified, yet more creatively than other games.

And the UI is just amazing. Being able to choose between multiple races/genders/skins/voices, setting your own settings such as cross hair style and color, and so much more.

UT rocks. Hard. It rocks hard.

That's the point though, if a 40k MMO was just UT with a new skin, who's going to pay 15 dollars a month to play it? If they go the Guild Wars route and eliminate any monthly fee, I could see it being successful since it will draw on a different crowd than the MMORPG community that will be playing Warhammer Online.

I was referring to gameplay alone when I drew the comparison to UT. I <333333 UT.

I highly doubt we'll see a free MMO out of this, since GW is involved.

Considering the fact that I really did Guild Wars, I would have no problem with that, especially if they use a similar payment plan. One thing I am deeply concerned about is that they will turn it into one more level grinder like UO, EQ, and WoW. I have absolutely NO desire to pay a monthly fee so I can spend 4+ hours a day crafting bolters in order to raise my Armament skill a point or two. They go that way, I won't even be tempted. I think that as far as gameplay goes, the Guild Wars team nailed it on the head. Levels count for nothing really, it is all about the skills you have and use thereof.

Of course, if they do something like Factions did with the boundaries that can be altered by player participation, that will rock.

one thing I want is the ability to split my fire everywhere, it makes no sense that a squad of 10 guard or marines or whatever all have to fire at 1 target with everything, is the guy with the lascannon not smart enough to realize maybe he would be better off firing at the massive tank looming overhead instead of the little man no bigger than a squat running at him, or is that far too complex for the 10yr olds?

While many MMO players complain about the grinding, I've found the same crowd was pretty bored by Guild Wars, which had no real grind whatsoever. I think they'll bag a lot more players with a WOW style of MMO, grinding and all, but they probably won't have to. I think Warhammer online will fill that Niche while 40k will be more like guildwars or something similar. THis will allow them to appeal to a broader range of players and not create a redundancy between the two games. I have heard that GW dropped out of the development of Warhammer ONline though, so maybe this will be another swing at the same ball. Only time will tell.
