Default PSN breach costs Sony a fuckhole of money

Sony estimates that the recent PSN blackout will cost the company 171 Million dollars. A lot eh? And chances are that it will increase.

It is the estimated total cost of the new Security System, the "Welcome Back" program, customer support, legal experts and shit like that. And the costs might increase if it is revealed that money would have been stolen from the exposed credit card accounts. And then we have the shit hole of legal cases.

So... That's like 5% of their quarterly profit margin or something similar?

My heart bleeds.

Yeah, 171 mil may seem like a lot to you and me but for a company as large as Sony it can't be that much.

I saw on a documentary (don't know what it was, it came on TV randomly) that Sony make a loss on each Playstation 3 they sell, but they get that money back through what is in the PS3 (something like that). I think it was to do with the Blu-Ray.

I know they are giving everyone who plays or played a free month and a half play time on their games and 500 Station cash. Then add in all of their down time.

I am shocked the number is not higher to be honest with you.

All gaming companies lose money on the sale of the consule, they make their money off of the licensing they charge development companies for making games on their system. Sony was willing to take a bigger loss on the PS3 when it was launched because they would make double the money back with games AND blu ray sales.

Personally I think this will be 171 million well spent, as PSN needed an overhaul for a while but Sony had no reason to do it.

Exactly the reason I said that it might very well increase. They do still have a shit hole of legal cases left to solve.

They just announced a forecasted loss of $3.2 billion, though that seems mostly linked to writing off a tax credit. Also the article mentions Fukashima, which probably cost them a lot more than the PSN loss. The PSN thing is a PR disaster though, and they deserved what they got for having such a weak system and then blaming everyone else for the problems.

One piece i read, i forget where now, actually pointed out that this 'hack' had been going on for some time. Basically it was something about the developer version of PSN having almost no security as logn as you were on a dev console. I think people had been using that exploit for a while, but one of the new firmwares the console cracking guys released made it broadly available, so the numbers went way up. Then someone noticed the network also stored all the user info. I got the impression this was not a massive targeted hack, more a case of Sony left the info in a cardboard box in an office with a door on the street and a broken lock, then cried 'haxxors' when someone wandered in and took it.
