That's really just a luck thing. Not every X-Box 360 is going to blow up when you turn it on, just a rather large minority. The issue is wide-spread enough that you can't say it's a small problem.

Writer of crappy fics, I hope you might derive some enjoyment from them.

It is nice of them to be proactive about this, though I am somewhat puzzled why it's only Pro's from 2009 with the problem and not other systems, like arcades and elites.
Quite simply, it's a manufacturing issue. Each kind of 360 will have used separate production lines. Each batch will have had parts ' assigned' to it. A box of drives with a slightly different firmware requirement may not have been compatible with the unforseen-at-the-time change. Much like how 99% of cds work in any cd drive, but some will just spin up in vain forever. (Or until you get bored of your cd player sounding like a spooling-up jetpack.)

^This

Plus if memory serves, depending on where your box was made, assembled and sold depends on wether its a pro with:

Jasper or Falcon M/Board
LiteOn or Hitachi DVD Drives

(Not 100% sure they were they actual parts used in Pro's, but you get the point, for example, Hong Kong may build Jasper/LiteOn pro's, Singapore builds Falcon/Hitachi Pro's, Hungary builds Jasper/Hitachi Pro's)

A mate of mine has had a premium for about 5 years now, no problems. I've had mine around 2 years, got RROD once but turned out just to be a slightly loose power cable lol.
