It's a Call of Cthulhu-esque alternate reality game, where you play as an Illuminati, Templar or Dragon (all secret societies) with full voice acting and AAA production values and budget. It reeks of film noir, X-files and Cthulhu, and is packed with urban legends and conspiracy theories.

I can't think of something humanity made that had a better concept than that except maybe electricity.

And let's not forget that it is going to cost you a monthly fee to play it. Fuck that. :p

Tribes was without any doubt one of THE best online multiplayer shooters ever made and nothing to date has even come close to be honest. I truly hope they pull this off.

one thing I want is the ability to split my fire everywhere, it makes no sense that a squad of 10 guard or marines or whatever all have to fire at 1 target with everything, is the guy with the lascannon not smart enough to realize maybe he would be better off firing at the massive tank looming overhead instead of the little man no bigger than a squat running at him, or is that far too complex for the 10yr olds?

You're a 40K (and Warmachine) player, I don't see how you could think 15$ is too much for a month of unlimited entertainment.

Besides, The Secret World is very likely doing an alternate model, just like Anarchy Online (which was the same company). They run real life billboard/poster ads in game in the same places you would expect to find them.

You get to play for free, they actually make more money off you, and it's completely immersive and just adds to the realism. I didn't count the wins, but it's at least a win/win/win situation

By the way, I played Tribes a bit way back when. Never got what all the fuss was about (although it was a very small amount of fuss from a very minor and VERY loud group of people)

Nobody's perfect.

Also, the Anarchy guys only started the ad-based/semi FTP model when they realized nobody was paying to play because the game was a six gallon bucket of wank.

What are you on about, Anarchy was great by 2001 standards. Imagine how hard it must have been to make an MMO when there was no WoW to rip off (which they to this day refuse doing)

I'll concede that their infrastructure (servers/ payment) was dribble at the time of launch, but at that point they needed to launch the game to make the money for it. Which is a funny paradox, but they survived.

I've tried playing it. Several times, I've tried playing it. It's just an alltogether pretty terrible game.

But you're right. They didn't rip off WoW. In fact, they probably partially inspired Blizzard to shamelessly rip off Everquest at every turn.

They weren't really original in what they were doing other than being one of the first games to fail hard enough to have to fall back to an ad revenue subsidized model to draw people in. The only difference is that the skins for the ranged weapons no longer had strings.

If you want batshit insane MMO devs who took a massive gamble in years past and made a success of it, though, there's a bunch of crazy (Awesome...but crazy) Icelandic guys I could direct your attention to...

I thought Portal was going to be the only surefire game I bought this year, but if this is as good as t2 I could be persuaded.

I really hope it is.

UT was always my favourite FPS, but the sequels never got any better than the original. I hope this manages to pull it off.

I just think you're one of the grudgebearers. And you're entitled to your opinion. But under any sort of objective weighting and critique, Anarchy Online was an OK game. But I get it, they kicked you in the groin and took your lunch money.

Concerning upcoming MMO releases, i dont think many will be really good except maybe GW2 which still free to play, will have true MMO aspect in it instead of instances like in first part.

If Mythic made DAOC 2 i would have jumped instantly, seem that many MMO devs dont realise that 3 sides are necessary for balancing factions on server for open world warfare. Lately only Darkfall was good for me but it seems its too hard for players or they dont get instant rewards. Talk about what aspect WOW has taught them, doesnt suprise me.

Eve is something special, truly unique game. Played alot during 2003-2006 and jumped back few times after that to checkout whats happening.

Upcoming Star Wars MMO interested me at beginning but after checked almost all official videos, i wont get it. No way.

MMO needs more sandbox games and not these instant gratification, linear level based games. Dark Age of Camelot was also linear in lvl based, but it still had one of best PvP systems ever on MMO scene. Although my personas favourite MMO game has been original Star Wars Galaxies before CU and NGE which totally destroyed that game.

Upcoming releases i have only eye on few:
Brink
Red Orchestra 2
GW2
