I would think the blame for the outage and the loss of information in the attack should fall soley on Anon's door, I'm not sure how much you know about how all this works but there really is no sure defense against attacks on the internet other then to just not be connected to it. On top of that a DDos with the amount of clients we are looking at is not something that can be defended against other then just to shut down the servers until it stops.
If you can prove it was Anon then you might want to go to the authorities with your evidence. There are good defences against DDoS attacks which exist they're just pricey and hard to implement.

It is known that Anon (as a group) did not make the attack on the PSN servers. They publicly announced that they would attack Sony in ways that wouldn't damage PSN users (Link here and here) after their first attacks.

They also made a public announcement about the latest attacks here.

Most likely it's some random hacker/hacker group doing it for shits and giggles. Like when Itunes got hacked a while ago.

Was there no someone who hacked himself into the White House database just for shits and giggles a year or so ago?

Might be a similar case.

Negligence on Sony's part is only a partly valid accusation to make. Sensitive customer information is logged away in their networks that could potentially fall in to the wrong hands if their security teams aren't doing everything possible. The trouble is, just as these security teams come up with a new tool to protect such information, the hackers inevitably crack it. You can't stop every attack.

More crap on Sony's plate now: http://www.gametab.com/news/3665344/

Sony is now being sued over the breach. It's a class action suit for Sony's 77 million PSN subscribers. We don't even know the full extent of what was taken and if the stolen personal information was used in illegal acts.

God I hate people.

The information had no purpose nor need to be on a customer facing server. That is where the negligence falls into play.

The problem with this argument is that sony have known about the weakness since late summer (when people began helping themselves to PSN games and add ons),
instead of acting on the problem itself they decided to react to those who were taking advantage of it and ignore the problem itself.

The fact that a company the size of sony left passwords and credit cards unencrypted and open to attack is not only stupendous, it's also illegal in a sizeable amount of countries.

Sony have no excuse here, just as Microsoft had no excuse for ignoring their own techs and not holding back the early 360's due to the RROD.

All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?

Likewise, running a company known across the planet isn't like growing corn.

Any system can be hacked, just as any bank could be broken into, but with a company as big as Sony i'd expect their security to be top notch. Everything that has been released so far has pointed to a serious ineptitude on their part, and they don't seem to be speaking up to defend themselves.

If I was a PSN customer, i'd be seriously pissed at sony right now, and i think i'd be entirely justified.
