Are the total war games any good?
And are there any good mods for them?

Some people love them, some hate them. There's plenty of demos, try out some of them for yourself. Do you have a Steam account? If so, just look up the Total War games on there.

Writer of crappy fics, I hope you might derive some enjoyment from them.

FictionPress.com: For original stuff.

FanFiction.net: For stuff that is part of an established universe.

I can only profess to have played Medieval II and the Kingdoms expansion pack, but both that and Rome: TW are pretty good games. I'm not crazy about the strategic AI, though.

Stainless Steel is a very good mod if you get around to buying Medieval II and Kingdoms; it's basically the Grand Campaign with Europe and the Middle East expanded and several new factions, some of which came from the Kingdoms campaign (Ireland, Teutonic Knights) and others having been created entirely from scratch (Aragon, Khwarezmid Empire).

Homebrew stuff for your viewing pleasure:

The mods for M2TW are outstanding; Broken Crescent, Stainless Steel, Call of Warhammer and Third Age are the mods to get - keep your eyes on Dominion of the Sword and All Under Heaven which are under development.

You can find out more on www.twcenter.net
