Default Star Trek Online

Star Trek Online has eaten an absurd amount of my time lately. While a lot of folks found the game lousy around launch (and indeed, it had some serious growing pains), Cryptic has gone to great lengths to improve the game. It even won the best MMO of the year award recently. It's worth checking out, even if you're not a Trekkie. Even more so, perhaps, if you gave it a go at launch and quit-- it really is a different game now.

A year after launch, the game only superficially resembles what it was at launch. Literally everything about it has been improved in some way since the launch, right down to such basic things as graphics (which were already decent) to the UI itself. The game's missions feature level adjustment now (so you can play some missions whenever you want, rather than following a progressive story)-- you're sort of free to seek out strange new worlds and blow them up as you see fit.

The space combat really is a lot of fun-- it's not as "techy" and in depth as EVE's, but you have a lot more direct control and has much more of an action game feel.

I have a fistful of trial keys available-- if you want to fly around and blow up some klingons and check out the game, just drop me a PM.

I enjoyed the trial and was going to subscribe, but they had no paypal (or similar) option, which meant I couldn't.

Shame as it was a fun game and I didn't get to see much during the trial.

Any idea if it's going free-to-play? I heard a rumour to that effect last year.

Looking for a friendly wargaming club on the Isle of Wight? Drop me a line.

There have been a lot of discussions about it going free to play. Typically, free to play is a death-knell for MMOs-- most current subscribers (myself included) want to continue to pay monthly, because it keeps the quality higher. If the game is free to play, the developer only has passing motivation to keep the game as a whole good-- really, their purpose becomes making sure the game supports the premium content they start charging you individually for. While there is that kind of premium content already, it's not really "content" so much as cosmetics.

Anyway, even though there's not a paypal option (or at least, there wasn't at the start), subscribing with a debit/credit card is pretty simple and is quite secure.

Turbine would like a word with you. Both LoTRO and D&DO have improved tenfold since going F2P/Microtransaction based, as have many others.
Cryptic are testing the water with Champions soon, and frankly, I see STO with all six of it's subscribers going the same way if Champions is a success, which it's almost assured to be. It's all in the marketing.
