Default Greed In The Industry

I could begin at a great number of studios/publishers, but I'll settle for Activision for now. There has been plenty of griping over the Call of Duty series lately, especially the amount of expensive map packs being churned out for Modern Warfare 2. Now there is to be a new Call of Duty game every year, and talk is buzzing around about adding a subscription fee to play CoD on top of your ISP and (for some) Xbox Live service fee.

Basically an analyst has been pushing for that to happen, and Activision has said that it is considering doing just that. Here's the gist of it, from IGN.

That said, are any of you concerned about this? It seems plenty of developers and publishers are descending to farming cash rather than putting out a solid game they care about. I feel that this trend would be terrible if it were to continue, and could potentially cause serious harm to the industry far down the road if everyone begins banking in on this. If the MW2 map packs are to hint at, millions of people would still pay to play CoD like this without question.

There are worries about Bungie falling down that path as well, as they recently signed a contract for a new IP with Activision. It's all still conjecture at this point, but worth discussion, I believe.

Interesting thread

I completely agree with you about Activision. Even before I heard about this ridiculous subscription fee they were in my opinion one of the most greedy in the industry for their ridiculous release schedule for CoD. 1 a year is way too much.

I personally see no reason for Bungie to create anymore games in the Halo series after Reach, unless they are to expand reach into a series of games as well in which case they too are headed down the alley of greed, even without signing a contract with Activision.

Regards,
Jake.

I hope they do it...I fucking hate CoD but then again no game should make a monthly subscription it just seems late

They have openly pointed to their partnership with Blizzard as inspiration for taking advantage of a monthly fee, since I believe they said 10 million people play Call of Duty or something. Apparently, those that have purchased the game and the majority of players who have purchased the $15 map packs isn't enough to appetize their monetary thirst. If Activision is going to make people pay to play a Call of Duty game, it should at least be a shooter MMO of sorts.

And I agree with you on Bungie, Red Corsairs. Since Activision will be serving as a publisher, I doubt the new franchise Bungie develops will be 'tainted'. Out performing the success that was Halo will be a challenge for them, sure, but we'll see what happens on the marketing side of things.

Hmmm, I heard rumors about Activision doing this before I left the industry but wow that analyst is really, really stupid.

This so called "analyst" clearly does not understand the basic ideas behind capitalism, that if a product is sub par it will not sell while great products sell great. I hope Activision fires this guy and no one ever hires him again because he clearly fell asleep through just about every single class he had in college.

Honestly I don't truly belive what I posted but that is how stupid the whole idea is. CoD does not offer anywhere near the amount of support that WoW offers on a regular basis. Bugs are not really fixed in a decent amount of time, hacking is rampant, and the only "new content" they can offer is map packs.

The fact of the matter is that publishers are not seeing the same levels of profits they did a few years ago it's because their games have SUCKED. Seriously has anyone even looked at all the shit that is available for the Wii? I can count maybe (and thats a big maybe) 20 games on the system that are worth playing, and most of them are made by Nintendo.

Sure there are a few games every year that are over and above amazing (Uncharted 2, Batman AA, GoW3, Creed 2) but generally most games barely hit the 80/100 mark. The games that do are generally all put out around the same time frame as well, either Oct/Nov or Jan-March. The only high profile game that is realesed in the summer is EA's Madden. You may get surpirses, Batman AA was released last Aug, but generally we see nothing big out of all the other months.

Now I would never complain that a company wants to make some money, its their right, it's why they're in business. Monthly fees are even reasonable, as any MMO player will tell you. Paying a monthly fee will only be a viable option if features are provided for the monthly fee, simply allowing access will cause CoD to flop utterly. Make the monthly fee worth it, new maps every month or something, and people will pay.

Gaming has become a victim of its own popularity and I for one will be glad when the fat is trimmed from the industry.

Alright, well that is good to hear, Sasha Nein.

If they want to make a huge Call of Duty MMO of some sort that's pay to play, that would be cool by me as long as it's worth the pay. And I'm definitely not against tournament fees, either, so long as they contribute to the prizes. But having to pay for multiplayer that is associated with the standard game of our day is ludicrous, and it's nice to see that Infinity Ward stepped in to say it's bogus.

A huge CoD MMO is cool by me too. I'm the kind of sad CoD addict that'd probably pay for it too

Jake.

Activision is the GW of the game industry. Basically the dickhead, money-grabbing company who doesn't give a shit about it's fanbase. Someone needs to tell these companies that there is a way to strike a balance between profit and fanbase happiness.

It's getting to the stage where me and my mates would rather just get together and play some cricket. All it costs is $50 for the basic stuff you need to play and then it's hours of free fun.

When I was a young boy, I dreamed of being a baseball...

I will never pay to play a game online. Ever.

one thing I want is the ability to split my fire everywhere, it makes no sense that a squad of 10 guard or marines or whatever all have to fire at 1 target with everything, is the guy with the lascannon not smart enough to realize maybe he would be better off firing at the massive tank looming overhead instead of the little man no bigger than a squat running at him, or is that far too complex for the 10yr olds?
