ohh, i love my RTS games.
Homeworld 2 was a good game, though i prefered Homeworld for the story line more.
Freespace as a fab game in its day, disapponited with Freespace 2 .. just did not get me
The entire Total war series is great, rome and Medival 2 was the best.
Dungion keeper was amusing.
Enjoyed COH and DOW series, though i was dissapointed with Soulstorm.. it kinda got tired by that point.
The original X-com was good :D, still play that today plus the new versions
But what i see here is noboody has mention the X series X2, X3, X3 terran conflict... these games are bloody Brilliant :D.. not more you could wish for out of an RTS.. great for empire building and getting in the firefights

Guys, if you want a really good RTS, try out Cossacks: European Wars. No unit limit, very little micromanagement, decent graphics, diverse units for all 16 countries that are available, also, mercenaries are available to use, massive armies can be organised, fleets, artillery batteries, etc. Friggin' awesome!

The best thing is, get 15, 36, 72, 120 or 196 infantry together, along with a officer and a drummer, create a unit of them, they all move together! Makes it very easy to keep an eye over them. The game also has a great tutorial, teaches you everything you need to know.

The only micromanagement you will need to do is have enough peasants cultivating food, because it's always slowly consumed. The more units you have, the higher consumption. No food means that your units will die off, one by one. Gold is needed to keep mercenaries in line, artillery, yachts, galleys and bettleships to keep shooting. Your ships will rebel if you run out of gold, just like the mercs. The only ships that don't need gold are frigates, which are the best choice ans battleships do have an astonishing RoF, but are slow, yachts and galleys are fast, but the have a slow RoF. You can also have ferries that can transport up to 80 units each. For shooty things you will need a constant supply of coal and iron. All the ore(gold, iron, and coal can be extracted from mines, which are infinite. You can also capture enemy peasants and non-military buildings with your troops.

threshed.com by Matt "Rewind" Cobb

"There is very little that can prepare you for the experience of Cossacks. The sheer size of the battles is mind boggling! In most RTS games (with the C&C series being the only exception that comes to mind) you only need around 20 workers. Not the case with Cossacks. In one of this behemoth's typical matches you will need around 200 resource gathering units. That's right, around 200 little peasants running around chopping timber, gathering stone, and mining gold, iron, and coal. This would put you near or over the unit limit of AOE, but in Cossacks you have no unit limit so it shouldn't be a problem. Almost every aspect of EW is of massive size. Their are 16 different playable nations, 6 different resources, 300 upgrades spanning two time periods, and of course the before mentioned limitless unit battles. All of the 16 different nations have not only special units on their side, but they also have completely different buildings!

"You would think that the mammoth size of this game would make it a micromanagement nightmare, not so. The game is very well structured so as to minimize micromanagement. The peasants, once assigned a task, rarely if ever need additional orders. When grouped with some of the games variety of drummers and officers your men will remain in formation and won't be captured (EWs equivalent to AOE's conversion). Farms automatically renew themselves without player intervention and the games mines and forest provide an almost limitless supply of resources at or near the players base. All these things help fuel the massive battles."
