Final Fantasy Durrrrrr teen.
*minor spoilers, like, for the first 4 hours of the game, nothing serious*
I like Final Fantasy. I´ve played 8, 9 and 11(to a extend) AAAAAAAAND Tactics.
I like the story´s, the sublime cutscenes and the sometimes awesome plottwists.
I also, and i know that you need to be a particular breed to like it, the typical “select target bla bla bla menu” attacking system.
Alas, i got Final fantasty 13, under the presumption that it be another masterpiece.
I have to say, the grapics are honkydonky awesomesause. Storyline seems to be a bit….inconsistant in speed, and i am sure they milked every stereotype that they could find.
We have Lighting, wich is next in line of the Air type names (Cloud, Squall) of silent and agressive leaders with a honking great sword, altho its now a 3 way segmented flipknife with inbuild gun type of thing. Think of Squalls gunblade, but now that it can fold, and you has her sword.
We have Vanille, wich is….as far as i want to spoilerize, a freaking drugabusing energiser bunny with a shadowy past thing, a uber optimistic girl that gives me the creepy feeling i have met sush a person somewhere in my past before. that somehow at the first point you can use her pulls a unknown weapon from behind a …. thing, and then use that weapon as if she is a master in it. And no, its not a simple weapon she pulls out, its a freaking antler headed staff that can flail 4 orbs arround. I doubt a master can really use it, let alone a girl that suddenly get that thing pushed into her hands. She also has some sort of rollerskates riding type of walk that annoys the living daylights out of me.
We have Hope, wich is hopeless, wich is a freaking emo, wich seemingly doesn´t care his mother dropped to her death, but then get a nasty fixation with the socalled murderer of his mother, and keep on being angsty. His weapon, a foldable boomerrang, is awesome tho.
We have Sahz, wich is a bit of a stereotypical black guy, big puffy lips, Afro, over the top moves. I mean, with every move, he HAS to pose like a cactuar, yeahright?
We have Snow, wich is a …. gah.
The characters miss flair, or anything likeable about there personality. The only one i resonably like at this point is Sahz, mostly because his personality would quite match mine. This point is what FF9 in instance does good. I mean, Steiner, the overweight knight that has a extremely big boner for hisself, and a giant hatred for the apeboy Zidane, does have this hatred for a reason. He wants to protect his princess. In FF13, Lighting seems to be devoid of all compassion for all others, Snow seems to have the need to protect everyone, Sahz is the daddy of all, Vanille is the sister of everyone blablabla.
The storyline just isnt that enticing at this part of the game, and thus i hope it will pick up.
They also changed the eidolions from mystical creatures to some sort of robot things. It´s ofcourse a personal thing if you like it or not, and i find it a nice idea, altho the second part of them is a bit too much SUPER GOGO POWAH RANGERS TRANSFORM TO ME. I mean, if the god of war and death Odin can transform from a halfrobot to a horse.. and the Ice goddess Shiva, wich is now a twin, called the Shiva bro´s into a motorcycle…. your going a bit too far. I love the robot idea, seriously, it fits the setting, but transformations are taking it a bit too far.
Everyone that knows a bit of gaming, and has internet, friend, or a life, knows that Square Enix changed the battle system. In the older Final Fantasy´s *pre 7*. you had a 2d screen where there was one row of your guys on the left, and a row of badguys on the left. You select a spell, attack or whatnot, and your guy does it. Then depending on your guys abilitys and speed, a enemy or another of your players do the same thing, and so forth. You could spend ages selecting a skill, and it wouldnt matter, seeing time effectively freezed.
In FF7/8, the battles became 3d, but effectively, the same thing happened. However, in FF9, things changed. ABT was born.
Basically, time continued when your selecting a attack, meaning you had to select a attack as quickly as possible. Reaction time became a pre, seeing as if you were just too slow in selecting your resurrection spell, you would see the “game over” screen more then you want to. However, you could put it in the old mode.
Now, in FF13, more stuff changes. ABT is the only thing you can have. Also, you control one character, the rest of your team is computer controlled. They have to be, because this time your action bars (the bars that more or less let you notice when its your turn) fill so fast that you never can control 3 characters. However, when you have less control then 1/2 of your party, especially in RPG´s, there is a bit of a problem wich i explain further on.
Also, in FF13, you don´t have a “one line VS other line” as in previous games.
Basically, a round arena is being made, and your party and the enemys are ploinked in it to attack eachother, and shuffle with eachother in it. However, you cannot decide wich direction your character is gonna move to. This gives you a huge tactical disadvantage. Let me explain it.
Your Sahz, the guy with 2 guns, against 4 enemy´s. You want to shoot the enemy´s with Blitz, basically, in Sahz case your guns becomes Uzi’s, and you rapidfire in a 60 degree arc in the front. However, just because you shuffled so idiotically. 2 enemys are now behind you, one is in the middle of your arc, and the last is too far to one of the sides. At this moment, you just wasted 2 “turnparts” on hitting one enemy.
But it gets worse. Your Lighting, and you want to Blitz, wich in her case is a 360 degree turn slash with your sword thing, 6 enemys that are struck together. You chose your Blitz at the start of your turn, while your bar is still filling. So now you wait 3 seconds before your bar is full, then run because your shuffling have placed you on the other side of the whole arena, all across the battleline, get hit by awesomely accurate Area of effect attacks that was directed to another party member, to the 2 people thats still close together, just because the other enemys shuffled away in the meanwhile. Your ability to effectively use AoE is hindered by the delay between you select a target, and the time that you effectively do that skill. This is further hindered with factors you cannot control, like your position vs your targets position. Control, a problem. The AI however, doesnt seem to have this problem
This also adds, and this is what i was referring to is that FF13 have the problem i like to call the “Guild Wars Syndrome”.
Guild Wars is a MMORPG that extremely fun to play with multiple gamers, but kinda SUCKS when your left on your own. See, you have play this in party´s of 8, there isn´t a way to play thu the game with less people in your party. If you are in a area that isn´t popular, aka, no human being is going to party up with you, your struck with NPC “hero´s” and “henchmans”. that you more or less can choise yourself. At this point however, Your party is so self-sufficient, that the computer more or less can handle itself without your input. furthermore, the computers are in most cases even BETTER then you are (are you able to interupt a spell the enemy launches within a second, with a spell that has a casting time of half a second?, aka, do you have a reaction time of less then a second to check if its worthwhile to interrupt?) that more or less you have do is sit back, and click a location you want to go and let the pc do everything. Your input in a battle is then 0%. You can do spells, but it wouldnt have sush a impact on the game that it matters.
The same is, to a lesser degree, in FF13. Your input in the game is more or less restricted to Paradigm shift (to go from RAWR to lets heal), and pressing the button to Autoattack. You CAN select your own skills in the particular paradigm, wich is sometimes handy, but 9 of the 10 time your just doing less damage then. Also, you can try to wait for a better chance to do area of damage attacks, but thats also less then optimal. This makes the battle system kinda a laugh, because you wont be able to infludence the battle so much as you want, and luck starts to become a huge factor between win or lose. And thats, especially with my atrociouis luck, never a good thing.
So far my outtake on Final Fantasy 13 for now. If anyone wants to discuss about it, send me a Tell on Darkblade.tumblr.com/ask But please, don´t spoilerize the game for me.
