Default Torchlight (AKA: Diablo, but cooler)

As someone who managed to destroy the buttons on his first laptop's touchpad playing Diablo 1, I think it's fair to say I'm a fan of the game. I've played all the expansions for the first one, and played most of the second, bought a game called Titan Quest that was a diablo clone, and one of the things that got me into warcraft when it initially came out was its diabloness (though eventually it got dull)

So when I hear about this new game, Torchlight and hear people describing it as diablo-esque, I got interested.

I've downloaded the Demo off of Steam and just spent the last couple of hours pleasantly enthralled.

It's not like diablo...it basically IS diablo, just...better! The graphics are stylized and a little cartooney, but GOOD, and that style works better than diablo's gritty (or grainy, as the case may be ), realistic graphics for the environment. It's brighter, livelier. Everything is big and interesting to look at, even if it;s gnawing your face off.

The gameplay itself is smooth and engaging. If you played diablo you know what to expect (and know some of the hotkey commands already), but there's some differences and improvements.

Everyone gets a pet, who's not just a capable fighter (they can even learn spells and wear rings and amulets) but is a mobile loot sack, able to carry items for you. What's more, with a click of a button you can send him running back to town to *sell* those items for you (good way to get rid of vendor trash without wasting tome and scrolls town portaling) this is just plain awesome.

I'm still too wound up to give a thorough and objective review, but I can say I *do* plan on buying the full version, once I;ve plumbed the depths of the demo.

Anyone who doesn't absolutely hate diablo and diablo clones should check this game out. And even if you do hate diablo, give Torchlight a try anyway, it might be different enough that you'll enjoy it.

Only problem is right now it;s single player only, but an mmo version is in the works.

The gameplay mechanics themselves are really good, but I can't get over how... 'WoW'y' the art style is, and that's really what's putting me off buying the full thing. The demo made me feel like my eyeballs were being molested by a Crayola box from hell.

I personally liked the colors and graphics better. It felt less oppressive and grainy than diablo. But that seems to be down to personal tastes

I plan on giving this one a go once I finish with Dragon Age.

Edit: grabbed this yesterday and yes it is a cool game.

one thing I want is the ability to split my fire everywhere, it makes no sense that a squad of 10 guard or marines or whatever all have to fire at 1 target with everything, is the guy with the lascannon not smart enough to realize maybe he would be better off firing at the massive tank looming overhead instead of the little man no bigger than a squat running at him, or is that far too complex for the 10yr olds?

Normally i would torch anybody who said any game was better than any of the diablos because im such a fanboy (atliest i can admit it right?) BUT torchlight IS a good game. Like you said it is all about your personal tastes. i personally like the more serious attitude and grittyness of the diablos but torchlight will suffice until diablo 3 comes out, whenever that may be. but i do agree if you find your diablo itch needs to be scratched torchlight is pleasing.

Dragon age and torchlight are both awesome :D

I like how Torchlight is giving me the hack and slash fix while Diablo 3 is postponed for longer, it's fun and completely mindless. I have to admit, looking at Diablo 2 and WoW, sure the graphics are very much more cartoony but like Gal, i really like it, it definately brings a nice feel to the game.

Dragonage is just pure win, i just spent a week solidly playing through it the story is so gripping and the gameplay is superb.

I completed the main quest on my alchemist and destroyer recently. When you do it unlocks Retirement (which lets you pass down one of your items ot a lower character, giving it a nice little power boost in the process), and also unlocks a bottomless random mish-mash dungeon in the Graveyard outside of town.

Every level seems to be randomly selected from the dungeon themes you;ve already gone through (one level can be catacombs, the next mines, the next goblin fortress, etc) with monsters randomly selected as well (though it does seem the level theme has an effect on the most commonly encountered monsters). Out front there are a pair of quest givers who give you random slay & fetch quests for every two or three floors, so you can keep up the mindless grind as long as you want.

I'm enjoying it
