Default A wireless connection issue I need help with

Hi guys.

This one is for all you tech guys who know a thing or two about networking!

I bought a new computer, and with it a new wireless usb adapter (My old adapter which worked perfect wasn't compatible with vista), and ever since I'm suffering from absolutely terrible download speeds (150kbps if i'm lucky), just having firefox open is a struggle to be honest.

First off it isn't the provider; both my brother and sister use wireless connections and their download speeds are fine.

It did go very fast again once windows had finished updating itself; but now with nothing downloading it's still super slow. The router is downstairs, not very far away, distance isn't really a issue.

I'm considering router settings need to be changed? What could possibly be changed within those settings that change from XP to vista?

I'm hoping this is the right place to be, considering I used to play a lot of online DoW, Call of Duty games online (bought this new computer ready for modern warfare 2, so this bad download speed is really putting the skids under my plans).

Thanks for reading, hopefully I can get to the bottom of it!

hey I just went through this recently. Best thing to do is to go to help and support in the start menu, type in enabling ics in the search bar and follow the instructions. slow speeds could be because of blocked sharing paths etc..... worked for mine but I have 3g broadband so I might be a bit different

If you shit in one hand and wish in the other we all know which one will fill up faster.

And as I walk in the valley of the shadow of death I will have no fear For I am the scariest mother f*cker in that goddamned valley!

Damn nature, You Scary!!!

Do you have any provision to connect your PC directly to the modem?

Are you ADSL or Cable?

try clearing off your hard drive of any unusable items such as failed downloads or stuff you dont use any more.

What type of router do you have? it should say someplace on the router whether it's a, b, g, or n. you also need to check the type of you wireless USB stick that you got.

a- very slow
b- little bit faster then a, but not by much
g- very good speed, should work fine for gaming
n- best connection out there playing games should be a breeze

compatibility: (obviously all letters are compatible with themselves)
a/b- compatible, same speed as a
a/g- compatible, same speed as a
a/n- not compatible
b/g- compatible, same speed as b
b/n- not compatible
(and vise-verse)

and again, what type of internet connection do you have.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that, since you have a USB stick, it might be slower than if you had a wireless card in your computer. you could add a wireless card to you computer but i DO NOT recommend it unless you are absolutely sure what you are doing, messing up with that could mess up your entire computer.
