Default Are games getting easier?

I've noticed recently that the sort games that used to take a month to finish off have been taking only a few days. Are games getting easier, or am I just getting a bit better at games (ha, no chance!)?

Take Halo for instance. Legendary used to be near impossible, particularly on Combat Evolved. However, on the latest Halo game, ODST, I've practically finshed it on Legendary in just a few days, with almost no problems at all.

So, are you finding games easier, or is it just my messed up brain?

I believe your right, They must be catering to their kiddy market, A lot of games that have been legendarily difficult, are getting softened up. Both "Sigma" versions of Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 feature softened difficulty, Hell Ninja Gaiden 2: Sigma actually features that as a selling point.

I've also found, many other games are softening difficulty too, I recently played and beat WET for the 360 on the hardest available difficulty right out of the box, with minimal trouble even as I learned the game mechanics and upgraded my character from base stats.

I really value a shiny, difficult, challenging game that requires strategic thinking and forethought, so this has been bugging me too, I hate it when my games coddle me along.

Also, you may just be getting better at the Halo play styles.

I'm all for playing this game, but you don't have to be a dick about it.

Games aren't really getting easier.

It's just that the holding companies (MSGS, EA and Activision being the worst) are demanding more output to make more money, hence shorter development cycles, which result in shorter games.

Want proof that it's the dev cycle? Look at the massively delayed games (How many times were Doom 3 and HL2 delayed?!) compared to any of the Halo sequels, for example.

i definitly noticed that games are getting SHORTER! gears of war is a shining example of shortnessness. i feel like lately developers have been focusing on making games look shiny and nice - detracting from the game play, story, and occasionally the difficulty.

me and my friend finished odst on legendary yesterday afternoon (that is, we started and finished that day), really disappointing - it was fun, but too easy and short.

on the other hand though, i found that if i go back to games i found hard as a kid, like diablo, that they arent hard any more either.. so i guess its a combination.

What i really want to see is a nice 60 hour rpg. oblivion and fallout 3 got boring too quickly...

A few years ago I came to the realisation that games companies are focussing more on online play, to the detriment of the story mode in games these days. The Gears of War games, the CoD games, and even Halo 3 and ODST, all beautiful looking, but extremely short. It now seems that story mode is an extra you get when you buy an online game. The only notable exception in recent times that I can think of is Assassin's Creed, which is why I'm looking forward to the new one.

i disagree about the halo games. i haven't played ODST yet but i definetly found halo 1 to 3 got progressively more difficult.

I'm not saying they got easier, just shorter. The Halo games are very tough if you play them on the hardest setting.

I assume there's another Halo series and you're not talking about the one with the floaty-jumping green bloke and Crayola aliens that had a learning and difficulty curve similar to that of Sesame Street? ;)

I found that legendary on halo 3 was similar to an easy heroic from combat evolved and ODST is only any good difficulty wise in firefight... storyline is very very easy... Gears on insane I found to be a decent challenge, also both rainbow six vegas's on realistic. they are both very fun on the hardest difficulty.....

If you shit in one hand and wish in the other we all know which one will fill up faster.

And as I walk in the valley of the shadow of death I will have no fear For I am the scariest mother f*cker in that goddamned valley!

If you want a challenging game, there's always Magic: the Gathering Games do seem to be getting easier, though, with very few exceptions. I remember the good old days of Resident Evil 2, which was both long and fucking hard...but hard in a good way I remember it took me almost three weeks to beat the first part of the game, then I found out you had to beat it again with the other character! Once I did that, I discovered you had to beat it again! TWICE! In a different order!

Nowadays, that would be seen as the dirtiest of all designer tricks, simply a length-padding technique. The reason it worked with Resident Evil 2 was because it was a different experience all four times, and each scenario gave you new insight into the story of the game as a whole.

God damn I miss that game.
