Default Mirrors Edge 2 in the Works

Cheers Escapist!

Electronic Arts has confirmed that despite lower-than-anticipated sales, it has begun work on a sequel to Mirror's Edge.

Developed by EA DICE and released in November 2008, Mirror's Edge was seen as a bold venture for EA, introducing fresh gameplay in a unique and pleasantly unlicensed environment. The game reviewed reasonably well but wasn't a big seller, especially by EA's standards, not passing the one million unit sales mark until February 2009. EA DICE Senior Producer Owen O'Brien said in October 2008 that the studio had plans for a Mirror's Edge trilogy but doubts about a sequel began to surface after the game performed below expectations.

But Patrick Soderlund, vice president of EA Games Europe and head of DICE, has now confirmed that at least one more Mirror's Edge game will be forthcoming. "You will see another Mirror's Edge for sure. It's just a matter of when that time is and what we do with it," he said. "We have a small team on it and I'm excited about what we do."

"Mirror's Edge was a risky move. It was a bold move, a very innovative and inspiring move," he continued. "The game wasn't perfect by any means. We would have liked the game to sell better even though the game has sold better than most people think."

No information about platforms or a release target were revealed, but it's good news for fans of the game and also for EA's commitment to new and creative IP development in the future. I for one, am one of those fans, I'm buzzed they're bringing out another :D

There was some obvious and a more than a few little annoying flaws with the first, but it was a breath of fresh air in the 'give me time to heal while I hide behind this table' world of games today, thoroughly enjoyed it, if you haven't given it a whirl you should at least try to grab a Demo!

‘You will see another Mirror’s Edge for sure’ says exec.

A ‘small team’ is working on Mirror’s Edge 2, EA has confirmed.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com at E3, the outspoken Patrick Soderlund, who as senior vice president at EA Games Europe oversees all European game development, said he was “excited” by what developer DICE, where he is based, will do with the game.

Mirror’s Edge divided opinion on its release in November 2008. While fans applauded the innovative Parkour-inspired first-person action, critics slammed the game for its short length and poor storyline.

When asked for an update on the future of the IP, Soderlund told us: “Mirror’s Edge was a risky move. It was a bold move, a very innovative and inspiring move. The game wasn’t perfect by any means. We would have liked the game to sell better even though the game has sold better than most people think.”

He added: “You will see another Mirror’s Edge for sure. It’s just a matter of when that time is and what we do with it. We have a small team on it and I’m excited about what we do.”

Soderlund’s comments are the first confirmation that a sequel is in development. Up to this point the game had only been mentioned by EA as a title in consideration. During a December 2008 conference call EA CEO John Riccitiello assured fans that the company wasn’t giving up on the IP, despite less than stellar sales.

As reported by Edge, Riccitiello said: "Mirror's Edge is one that was very strongly reviewed, that one's going to go forward. We're probably going to look into some issues around the design to make sure strong IP is married with strong business."

Unfortunately Soderlund couldn't offer any other details or a possible release date on the game.

Mirrors Edge is brilliant. I enjoyed the fact it got me away from mind numbing killing all the time, and if you never stop you actually have to think a tiny bit about what you are doing. My issue with Mirrors Edge 2, What can they do different? It may well be a one trick pony.

Do not disallusion yourself brothers, today we die, our bodies broken and our souls shattered, we will be remembered as corpses on a battlefield.Raise hell my brothers for one day our great Father will hear of our struggle, and he will be honoured to call us his Sons. Let me get this straight...

...

.....

......

It's a video game about running? Seriously? I'm no stranger to free running but making a video game about it is like writing the atheism bible. Just hit the track a few times and go out and try some crazy shit; I guarantee you it's both cheaper and much more fun.

A video game about running...lol. We are approaching the bleak future depicted in WALL-E a little to fast for my tastes.

and shooting.......yeah don't ask how they fit that rubbish in to a game based around running, although the running part does fail in quite an epic fashion, because it never worked.
