Bring on the comparisons. A well-educated 40K fan will win every single debate. No one can argue against the fact that the Tyranids came out first. It's a simple, documented truth. As a matter of fact, considering the origins of WarCraft, it's impossible to deny that Blizzard got a lot of material from GW. It wouldn't be unfair to call the Zerg wholesale rip-offs of Tyranids. BAD rip-offs.

And then someone brings up HR Gigers "Alien".

*SMACK!!!!*

Oooh, that was brutal! :fuck:

Eminently true however and unfortunately for both companies blatantly obvious. Hell just look at the the previous Tyrant model for example. The thing just scream Alien Queen.

one thing I want is the ability to split my fire everywhere, it makes no sense that a squad of 10 guard or marines or whatever all have to fire at 1 target with everything, is the guy with the lascannon not smart enough to realize maybe he would be better off firing at the massive tank looming overhead instead of the little man no bigger than a squat running at him, or is that far too complex for the 10yr olds?

The only similarities between Giger's Aliens and Tyranids is that they're both creepy aliens with a rigid caste-based society. They don't even reproduce the same way. Aliens are parasitic, Tyranids are super consumers. Conceptually, Tyranids are closer to being Borg than Aliens. Now, if someone were to say, "Genestealers are a rip-off of Aliens," they'd have a valid point. But then again, they were SUPPOSED to be rip-offs. Space Hulk forever!

Think about it like this: if someone made an Aliens-based miniatures game, no one in the hobby would stomp their feet and whine about how they'd ripped off Tyranids. That's how dissimilar they are. The same can't be said about Tyranids and Zerg. And while we're talking about disrupting StarCraft fluff, didn't 'Craft include Space Marines? Hey, didn't ALIENS have Space Marines?

It is true that the last Hive Tyrant looked a lot like the Alien Queen. That doesn't stop Space Marines from looking (and functioning) like Imperial Stormtroopers, though.

It's true that Tyranids were inspired by the Aliens movies. But they're not measure-for-measure copies like the Zerg are of the Tyranids.

Until someone mentions the parasitic Genestealer Cults that came before the Nids.

That's like blaming them for having space ships. Space Marines are an old sci-fi concept.

>> Why do peeps batter on about they stole this idea from this? Every sci-fi/fantasy idea/race is ripped off from something else. What the hell are Zerg by the way?

Zerg are nasty all-organic bugs that infested the outer rim of the Terran expansion during Starcraft, and Starcraft: Brood War. Computer game rip-offs of the Nids, who are in turn ripped off of Aliens.

You'll forgive me, but you must be mistaken. I've met your makers, and they don't even know your name...

Err Alien: Nids
Terminator: Necrons
Space Marines: Stormies from star wars
Fantasy: Tolkein

Its all there, and everyone borrows from a load of other stuff. I dont think anyone minds as long as people can admit stuff has been at least 'inspired' by other things. Hell, the WBB roll is an obvious homage. If you can't admit this you are being a little closed minded.
Back to dawn of war though, it would be really awesome if we had a special server/room etc. What would also be quality is if people used their heresy handles and painted their on screen armies the same as their table top ones: This was one of my favourite parts of the DoW series (also conveniently borrowed from relics homeworld series, which was fantastic)
