Default Hellgate: London

Well I was lucky enough to sneak my way into the multiplayer beta for Hellgate London and I have to say that it is a DAMN cool game. I will be buying this one for sure.

one thing I want is the ability to split my fire everywhere, it makes no sense that a squad of 10 guard or marines or whatever all have to fire at 1 target with everything, is the guy with the lascannon not smart enough to realize maybe he would be better off firing at the massive tank looming overhead instead of the little man no bigger than a squat running at him, or is that far too complex for the 10yr olds?

Holy crap, after messing around with this game for a few days I have to say that, bugs nonwithstanding, I am VERY impressed. Picture diablo with a realistic setting and guns added in and you have a good idea of how it is, right down to the areas that change every time to load them. Perfect example is the museum area I was running around in. Had it nearly fully mapped and the game crashed unexpectedly so I had to reload and start the mission over only to find that the museum was COMPLETELY different in layout. Weapons are hugely varied and the classes are all cool as hell with the only exception being the Templar close combat characters. Since the game is an rpg all the fighting you do is based on stats so even if you are standing right next to the giant daemon and hacking away with your sword there will be times where to watch the weapon strike the deamon with absolutely no effect. Not that you hit and didn't do damage mind you, you didn't hit at all and this really detracts from the feel of combat. After all, I don't care what level you are, even a child can hit a barn with a bat from a foot away

Graphics are not stunning by any means but they are MORE than adequate, even on my aging system and the ability to mod your weapons is really sweet, giving you the option of turning that gun you have into a superweapon designed for a specific use if you wish.

Overall, I am impressed.

My mate has been going gaga over this and frequently has to change his pants while talking about it. Just wish my rife-tile would allow me to play it.

i dug this up from someone who played the demo. He is a respectable source in the gaming forums my bro goes to

1. Broken

Select Marksman, dual-wield, with one gun being an automatic pistol and the other firing high-powered (but slow) bolts. Put all of your points into the Grenade skill (hint - spam that grenade skill). Hold down both mouse buttons, and circle-strafe, while bunny-hopping as quickly as possible (spam that space bar). Move backwards (maintain a distance) from the enemies while straffing. Congratulations, nothing in the demo can *touch you* except for the two "mini bosses" you'll face (the boy's leg and a Bag-o-Bones).

2. Broken

First-person mode is only available while you're using guns, the moment you pick up a sword you lose this mode. However, there is no point going into third-person mode, you really can't see behind you that well anyway, and it limits your view while you bunny hop / circle strafe your way to victory.

You need to be in first-person mode because you have the ability to stop pretty much anything. Your distance guarantees you won't get hit, you can strafe around any ranged attack, and the "jumping" enemies actually freeze in midair the moment they're getting hit by the machine gun fire, letting your more powerful bolt shots finish them off quickly.

3. Dull

Hellgate London is *grind-tacular*. Played any MMO ever? Congrats, you know what you're in for. Except, unlike WoW, it's not this expansive world you explore. It reminds me of Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance sans the story or caring about what happens. Find 8 capacitors. Kill 3 Zombies. Collect X widgets and Y scrap to upgrade to Z weapon. Sounds like fun, right? However, if compared to MMOs it simply doesn't compete, yet it lacks the real story depth, voice acting (saying random things while I read a different set of text is not voice acting), et cetera to be compared to WRPGs like Oblivion or The Witcher.

It's bad with a capitol "lame".

4. It makes you want to play better games

Play as a blademaster and you'll crave God of War. Play as a marksman and you'll want to play a horror-FPS. The grinding... just doesn't add to it, and since real aiming mechanics are removed, it just leaves you craving something more. I'm not an MMO fan so I can't say, it may have any appeal to that kind of gamer. For me? I found it dissapointing, I was expecting something more, and instead I found every-other "kill a lot of weak enemies while bouncing around like an idiot" game I've ever played.

Can't say I agree with that really. And don't forget, the beta is still ongoing right now and some of these things are being addressed. Will it be the best game of all time? Doubtful. Will it be a damn fun game to play? Certainly.

Got a level 22 Marksman.

If that's any indication, I love this game.

Also, the demo is a shell compared to the game. They took old code and slapped some stuff to make the demo. It's hard to tell its even the same game.

I'm enjoying it so far. Ok, there's a few bugs in it and some of the item augmenting stuff doesn't work properly, but for sheer carnage it's immense fun. The random RTS style bits are crap though.

Yeah. The turret part kind of pissed me off, and the RTS bit I just kept throwing the guys at the demons. No reason why not.

>> Have to agree with Initiate Im afraid. This game is dull as dishwater. So many niggles and broken parts that the game becomes on-enjoyable really quickly. And its the full game Ive played, not the beta. Have got Crysis though, and its damned good.
