Default Why?

Basically why do you play video games? Some people can't find the appeal at all and find the people who play them to be childish and stupid, Others only do it because their friends do it and they don't want to be different but why do you play games?

For me It's the story telling they can do. I love fantasy genres in books and to see it displayed so well in a game does it for me.... that's why I prefer a lot of the more sci fi or fantasy games over things like GTA anf=d fifa.....

If you shit in one hand and wish in the other we all know which one will fill up faster.

It depends, storytelling is generally important, although it does depend on the genre. I admit in most shoot-em ups or beat-em ups, especially during PvP the idea of any kind of a story tends to go out the window.

However when playing by myself, the DM/Roleplayer in me often makes me go down odd route. Such as having WWE games where I barely used any actual Wrestlers and used the CAW mode to create loads of my Roleplay characters. I've done the same thing in Soul Calibre 4, and even have an old Pro Evo game where most of the teams have been modified to represent football teams on a fantasy world of mine.

In games where I can't modify anything the story is key though, most of my fave games other than those styles above. Are games such as Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Dynasty Warriors, all of which have a great narrative going through them. Even the shooters I'm fond of had good stories as well, Halo and Call of Duty 2 and 3.

Of course if the game is just fun it can catch my interest, Carsconne is one of my fave games on LIVE and its just a computerized board game. I often lost loads of time in the past to silly things such as Boogy Bunnies, Tetris and those sorta of jump in play for five mins and leave as well.

So in all I think the main thing for me is how fun the game is to play, followed by if I can make it mine (via create modes) and then Storytelling. Its probably why I like WoW so much as I get all three. The game is lots of fun, I can make it mine by designing my characters and its got some pretty fine storytelling throughout.

Sci-fi and fantasy "come to life". Basically same reason as OP.

lets me unwind, entertain me when I'm bored, distract me from problems, inflates my imagination, and is all round fun, thats the main reason for playing them, for fun, and yes its a waste of time, all fun is, but thats the point in fun, to waste time you'd spend being bored.

You'd be surprised at the amount of people who believe that because it's not productive it's completely useless.... The amount of people who make fun of grown men who play games in town is frightening... But that could be because Gamestop is situated between 2 women's shops....

You know, I asked myself that question a while back and that's one of the biggest reasons why I stopped playing video games. You can't socialize as much as you can on Heresy or at a flgs or GW, so I stopped playing and went on to 40k and sports.

My major circle of friends are all pretty much hardcore gamers so it allows me to socialise more and unfortunately there are very few people around my area on heresy so I can't socialise that way.....

First and foremost, it's a vice; that is to say, it is an escape. When taken in moderation, it can be a rather healthy vice, as opposed to others of a less-than-savory variety.

Secondly, it is a way to exercise the imagination; this is the story-telling aspect that draws many gamers in.

For me, it's all about gunfights and rounded characters, in that order. That's the main reason I can like Gears of War 2 so much when other, more hardcore gamers are quick to dismiss it.
