Ok so feeling very dubious I did as you said and re-installed the game. Then tried to install Winter Assault and for some magic reason it worked!. Not only does it work, it works fine to exactly the same standard as the orginal with same meduim settings.

Thank you so much. I'm quite literally dancing for joy. No need for a mod for the Guard now.

Most excellent good sir. Glad to be of service.

Few simple steps when troubleshooting computer problems:

If that doesn't work, might as well
2)Reboot again, mash f8 before windows starts to load, run in safe mode.

As far as software goes,
3)uninstall, reinstall, reboot

Sometimes files get thrown to random parts of the harddisk because is so fragmented, and that can cause problems.
