The story in X2/3 is really janky, but really they're all shit, and Rebirth is no exception to this.

The brilliant thing about the series is the freeroam aspect, and that's where TC and AP really hit the nail on the head. The escalations between the factions in the background was nice, but it was something that was only loosely inspired by the overarching story and it managed to lend a lot to the overall ambiance. By trying to shoehorn a coherent 'plot' to follow into a game about exploration and setting out on your own path, they really did a disservice as a whole.

Hopefully, they use Rebirth with the next one similarly to how they used X compared to X2. That is to say, ignoring most of what they did, starting fresh, and mostly just wrangling with the engine. There's a good game somewhere in there. It's just covered up by ship limitations, a horribly janky interface and the most convoluted, unfriendly and unnecessary attempt at forcing a single player game to feel 'social' that I've ever seen.
