He starts with a bolt pistol and a knife because its a video game, and you have to earn your weapons. The other option would have been to come in with a thunder hammer and lose it immediately in the ork ship crash.

I personally loved the game, and its what got me into 40K. I remember seeing the trailers, thinking it looked incredibly badass and I only had a vague notion of what Warhammer was. Played the demo and was immediately hooked; as soon as I shut it off I was online checking out GWs site.

There's nothing really wrong with the materia system in itself. It's not broken in the slighest as it was DESIGNED to allow you to create synergy, your own strategy and to stop tedious min-maxing of characters that will facefuck a playthrough if one bad thing happens.

That said, the storyline is shit, it's full of needless 'tension', and the only characters worth a damn are Cid and most of ShinRa. That said, it's great fun to annoy hardcore fans of the game by pointing out they've been fooled, and it's really "A Hideo Kojima-like masterpiece of a story about a down-and-out pilot finding a reason to fly again."

FF8 is a cluster fuck of a game that has so many dropped plot points and poor design elements that it shouldn't be mentioned on any excellent game list ever.
FF8 had a lot of great points to it, however. While the storyline had enough holes in it to make people think it was actually a rabbit warren, and the junction system was screwy, the base concept of the gameplay was incredibly interesting and under all the telltale signs it was rushed, there was a damn good mechanic there that still holds up.

Personally, I think it's pretty unarguable that FF6 and 12 are the best Final Fantasy games. 6 because it's everything a FF game should be, and 12 because it's 1) A damn good game in its own right with solid mechanics, setting and (Vaan and Penelo notwithstanding, but they weren't originally meant to be in the game) 2) nothing like a Final Fantasy which is a plus point in itself.

Halo Reach doesn't get to take the best in the franchise, especially since Halo set the gold standard for FPS until CoD:MW came out.

For the Resident Evil franchise 4 showcased everything the series was meant to be. It still had the survival horror elements but allowed for more action oriented game play that really reflected your characters background as a Police office and a Government Special Agent. While the older games were great, the players inability to use their weapons effectively keeps them down. Especially when compared to how well RE4 does it.

Or maybe people care because of who aries is. Aries is a healer, all of her limit breaks are healing/protection related.

FF8 Has a good story, but once again you have to read everything.

She's the only dedicated healer in the entire game. For people playing RPGs that is a core character you want to have in your party from a mechanics stand point. You are forced into using her in your group because she bring an advantage to your party that no other character has the option to.

If she was a damage dealer, just like every other character, she could have been switched with anyone and the story would have been the same.

I never said it didn't have a good story, but when you have a dropped plot point of "hey guys did you know that we all grew up in the same orphanage, and our care taker is the games primary bad guy" that's a little crappy.

That's the point aries is the closest thing to decent being the game has.

Everyone else has lots of blood on their hands.

FF8 is a bit more complicated than that. The entire game is basically a stable time loop. Since they give me headaches I'm not going to explain it.

Dedicated healers etc are generally bad things. If anything, it's one of the few points of the grossly overrated FF7 that is good, as it encourages you to not min-max and pigeonhole as such.
