Game Dev Tycoon

Anyone hear about this story?

Game Dev Tycoon

Basically, it's a game where you can run your own games development company. What they did though, was to be fair a stroke of genius. They released a DRM free version onto torrent sites, but it wasn't an exact copy. About half way into the pirated version the player starts getting messages that their games keep getting pirated, loosing them sales and money, eventually making the player bankrupt, something that doesn't happen in the legit version of the game.

What then happened was several moments of pure internet comedy genius. People with the pirated versions started going online looking for help, asking on public forums if there was any way to combat the pirating, complaining that the game couldn't be beaten, and that it was broken.

I'm fairly ambivelent about the whole pirating thing, I don't personally pirate anything (just free porn maybe, once or twice) but I'm not on my high horse here, just a really interesting tactic that these game developers used, putting a different side of the story forward.

It was a great idea that, by the companys own admission, didn't work. They put coding into the game that could be tracked.... 93% of all users of the game were the pirated version.

It was a good stunt that pointed out the problems of piracy with the modern gaming market. People bitch about online passes, always on drm etc... But that's the reasoning why. So many people steal the games with no intention of buying them...

And you know who suffers from it? The person who buys the game.

Batman ark something or other had that DRM where you couldn't glide. Once it was discovered the people who cracked the game found a way to disable it.

The issue isn't piracy. The issue is that companies hype up their product so much that when people buy it they find out that it's crap.

I downloaded a demo of a game once. What they officially gave us was crap it told nothing of what the end product would be. However a way to activate debug mode was discovered. Once you activated it you found out a bit more about the game. While it wasn't crysis it wasn't a bad game. Just one that wouldn't last.

Crysis 2 is another example. It had that huge leak. I also know allot of people who downloaded it and later bought the game because of the leak.

What devs should be doing is releasing better demo's I don't want a timed mission I want something that will show me what I am getting. The new AVP demo was a great example it provided match making and the ability to play as any of the three races. That is a demo done right.

The thing about Game Dev Tycoon was that it was cheap (only like $8), DRM free (even the legal version), had a demo available nd was by all accounts a good game. In short, it was everything that the 'political' pirate types crow about wanting to see in games so they'll stop stealing them, and what happened?
Day of release 9 our of 10 people chose to steal it anyway.

Which tells me that all the game-stealing assholes out there ruining it for the rest of us are really just cheap entitled little shits who toss out some platitudes about trying to teach the industry a lesson to justify their own theft.

^This. Exactly this.

You can spout all the crap you want about 'the only people who suffer are those who buy the game', but this I what it boils down to.

And as for Batman Ark... you've pretty much just said it... the DRM stop people gliding.. On the stolen illegal version.

Not everyone who pirates games are entitled shits. I've been burned four times by games that I purchased. Because my PC couldn't run them even though everything says I can. Allot of demos run fine but the release lags like crap. If I Could have known that before I bought it I'd have never got it.

Don't say I should be looking at the system specs I do and everything I see says my PC should be fine.

The guys over at extra credits give a good balanced view on most things game related (as they are industry insiders), they set out exactly what happens when games are pirated in this video

OK, this got me real interested in the game, so I went and downloaded the demo. But then this happened.

Not just once. But twice. *groan*

But because I am a cool guy, I gave it a third try. OK, now it worked. But I still feel they need to fix that shit.

But once it works, the game is awesome, and I recommend everyone at least checks out the demo of it. I must say that I‘d have felt terrible if a message had suddenly popped up saying my game is getting pirated. I was so happy when I was getting 9 reviews, but I still managed to get bankrupt after about half an hour of fun, and my company got bought by by Electronic Arts (or the ingame equivalent).

Five stars to the developers, they are awesome. Will definitely be buying the game.

Also, those pirates are assholes. While there are some situations when I can justify it (of which most were mentioned in the video Gary posted) there is absolutely no reason at all to pirate this one. No Ubisoft bullshit DMR asswankage seems to be involved, and the devs are all cool n‘ shit. Douchebags, everyone of those pirates.

I pirate a fair few things I do admit, but I've never pirated a game, okay that's a lie I used to pirate Visual Novels, but that's because I'm in England so can't play them otherwise.

But this I just awesome, those complaining about the piracy in a pirated game was priceless.

Regarding the video I take issue with one point about never being too poor to buy games. Yes a console and such are luxury items, but my Nintendo laptop for example took me just over a year to save up for, and even then ira not high end or anything, just average. So I have to save to buy myself a game which I buy 1 - maybe 2 depending upon deals/used - so if I buy the game and its buggy/short or terrible it can really bum me out since I'm stuck with it for a long while, so no I'm not saying piracy is justified - never done it with games and ain't starting- just that the way he dismissed too poor as a reason really rubbed me the wrong way.

Weird... as when I first heard about the game back when it was announced they'd done the pirate thing, I went and tried the demo... then actually bought the game as it was a lot of fun. Never had a single problem with it.

Appart from my Norton flagging its as a potential threat when installing it as it wasn't recognised... but that's probably as they're a small company.

That said, and its a good game and a fun little management sim. Definitely worth a try if you like that sort.

And as said by that vid... Theres Zero reason to pirate a game, unless you cannot buy it legally where you are.

As said.. if its not worth buying, or its buggy, or whatever reason you can think of to not pay for it... why the hell do you want to pirate it and play it?

Edit: Also.. if you've bought a game and can't play it as your comp can't run it or whatever... Just take it back to the store and ask for a refund. Legally, they can't refuse to do so .
