Default EA dropping Online Passes

EA is dropping the much hated Online Passes.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/05/...-online-passes

Let‘s see what they come up with instead.

[Flerden] 9:05 pm: Why the hell can't he just go offline if he goes to watc tv?
[dark angel] 9:06 pm: It is Doelago, we will never know

You mean by requiring people to purchase new copies of the Games so the publishers MAKE MONEY to run the servers that people use to play multiplayer?

I was unaware that EA was a non profit.

There's a difference between making a profit and profiteering.

You're fine with companies telling you what you can do with your property? I'm not. I payed my money and the servers that I play on aren't hosted by EA, other gamers host them. It's profiteering not running upkeep.

If I want to lend it to a friend when I'm not playing it it doesn't tax the servers anymore as its still only one person. What happens if my PC dies? I should have to pay another 20 bucks?

There is, but forcing you to buy a new copy of a game to access online features that are run and maintained by the publishing company is not profiteering.

What property are they telling you what to do with? The game isn't yours, all you own is the CD. If they want to require you to purchase the game at retail so they can actually make money off the sale, that is their right as the owners of the game.

All you bought when you purchased the CD was a licence to play the game, a licence that the publisher of the software decided is non transferable. It's their legal right as the publisher to make that decision.

I bet you also hate Software publishers that only allow you 2-5 installs of their products on your PC.

The fact that EA are using the lack of online passes as a positive marketing tool shows exactly why it is bad. The same with DRM Free products and the lack of Always Online.

Those features are bought once. They are already payed for. Me giving the game to my friend means I am not using it. That server load is not increased by me not using it.

It was to stop the resale of items, and to increase EA's sales while removing the money from those who'd bought it first and decided to sell it. It takes money from 3rd party and puts it into 1st party. Which is all well and good.

However , Books, DVD's, old clothes, anything, has thriving second hand markets. Yes, the makers would initially like to get extra money of the original sales, but

And no, I don't like the limited Installations of certain products. I believe that once bought, it should be yours. It's why I hate the idea of subscription services like Office 365.

The legal right of something is hardly a valid defence except in a court of law. While I'm not going to go overboard and state that it's morally and ethically wrong, what I will say is that EA did it for the wrong reasons. It is EA and companies attitudes like them that lead to anti-capitalism and derision and misunderstanding from certain factions to the right hand side of the world.
