Default Graphics Cards!

Hooray another one of these threads.

Right I have an issue of sorts, I have a PC an AMD Quad Core which seem fine for everything I want to do except the Graphics card is a bit lightweight, it's a PCI Express card. Now it's been literally years since I've bought a computer component so I have no idea what goes anywhere any more. Basically what I want is a decent card which will fit a PCI-E slot (2.0 x16 I think). Not looking for anything too fancy just something to make my World of Tanks/Eve etc run better. Perhaps Diablo III but then the rest of the bits might be a bi lightweight for that.

Is your Graphics Chipset GDDR2 or GDDR3?
If you don't know that, what Graphics Card do you have in now?

Connection type? VGA? DVi? HDMi?

How much are you willing to spend on it?

Do you have the specs for your mobo/cpu/ram/psu? Would be a massive help for recommending cards.

I have checked now and it's actually an Intel Core 2 Quad 2.5 Ghz, with some ATI Radeon HD 4350, 4Gb of fairly bog standard RAM. Like I say this is not a gaming PC mostly working just looking to help the old girl out a little.

Price i'm not that concerned with, anything too good will require me to replace too much of my PC to be worthwhile though so I would think lower end of the scale. Like I say it's mostly for World of Tanks/EvE

I'd be inclined to go with the 6770, 6790 or 7750. It's not too much of a leap price wise to go up to a 6850 or a gtx460 though.

To say whether any of them would definitely work, i'd need your mobo and power supply specs. If you're like me and can't remember what parts you put in it 5 mins after building it, this program is very good for that.

6950 on sale for 149 today - that would be a nice card.

If you aren't into investing massively in this asa gaming machine the 6xxx are probably better value than the 7xxx right now. You could get a 6870 for 129 or the 6770s suggested above are around 100.

A quick look suggests the 6870 outperforms the 7750 in most regards while the 6950 is another increment better than the 6870.

As said above you need to check what will physically fit in your case, also whether you have enough power from your PSU, both in terms os having enough Watts, but also making sure you have 2 PCIe cables (which at least the 6950 needs).

The case is snug I would say maybe even need a low profile card*, I am going to assume the PSU is on the edge of power consumption and would probably need replacing anyway.

*I say that because this is roughly the PC, mini tower case but some websites list the PCI-E slot as low profile.

it can fit in a pci-e slot, but i am not sure... looking at those specs, that you have enough power or if it will even fit. i run a nvidia 280 and an ati 6770 and they are both large bricks.

for the ati i run, you need 450 watt power source.

other information on what you need to run it:

physical dimensions:

Dimensions (Imperial):
8.7 x 4.38 x 1.5
Dimensions (Metric):
22.1 x 11.12 x 3.81

depending on your actual power source and case size... you might have to go to a nvidia 8XXX or less.

know this is not what you are asking, but if you can find a person who builds computers, you can get an above average desktop for about 500 to 800 dollars... depending on how above average you want. my latest, which runs everything on high res was about 750.

a suggestion, for what it is worth, avoid mini towers for the next computer... they make upgrading ... difficult.

I like the Mini tower as it's much neater, looks better in my house. I mean I can build a PC if I needed, that electronic engineering degree has to be good for something, the idea is to do something lower effort. or I could use the i7 PC that I have for work. Tearing out a PSU and Card is quick and easy, if that's simply not possible then that's also fine it still runs the games I actually play on it fine just now.
