Default PS4, aka "Orbis" rumors

THE NEXT PLAYSTATION, AT A GLANCE

Is called, or at least carries the working codename, "Orbis".
Is scheduled for a Holiday 2013 release.
Won't be backwards compatible with PS3 games.
Will lock new games to a PSN account as an anti-used games measure.

New games can be bought either on Blu-Ray or downloaded.
Current specs are an AMD x64 CPU and AMD Southern Islands GPU

The two things in bold are really strikingly bad ideas. That means no rentals, no buying games used, no borrowing games between friends, no pooling game libraries. Sony seems to think its the next Steam, but there are a couple differences, most important being that steam games aren't $60. Not sure what they charge you guys over in the UK but I doubt its any more forgiving.

Lets also not forget that this will drive a lot of retailers out of business, as most of their profit margin comes from resale of used games.

Can't see those specs being accurate. Locking games to an account seems like a tremendously bad idea as well.

Steam games ARE $60 - PC hasn't avoided the price hike - but Steam's gratuitous (and common) sales make things a bit more justifiable. Still, binding games to a PSN account for consoles is definitely a bad idea. One of the biggest pros to consoles is the ability to "pop in and play" - no installation, no specs to really worry about - and the discs are small and portable, which means lending is simple. Take that away and, well, you have Steam, with shittier graphics for your games. Also, failing to make the PS4 backwards-compatible renders entire libraries useless, a very stupid move.

We'll see how it turns out. I'm interested in next-gen consoles because, let's face it, the current stock is aging very fast.

the ps3 is already not compatible with ps2 titles, destroying lending and second hand sales is just good business sense, xbox will do the same.

I hope that was sarcastic bitsandkits

If anything, sony will lose business, especially if microsoft doesn't do this.

He's right. Publishers gain nothing from second hand sales, so doing anything to limit or outright destroy the used game market it's good business for them. Plus they even say in the linked article that Microsoft is looking to do something similar.

Now to be fair everything you listed is nothing but a rumor at this point so all of it should be taken with a large helping of salt. That being said I want to point you to another article by Kotaku (linked in the article you linked as well):

http://kotaku.com/5879439/why-an-xbo...-perfect-sense

where they discuss WHY the next Xbox will have something like what they are saying the next Playstation will have. They also talk about how it may work, and how it may not "lock" out games. It's a good read, I'd go over it.

Good read, yes.

Do I support the idea? Still no.

Thus begins the death of console gaming market, I feel that SOny nor MS are going push forward on this and plus nothing trully official has been issued yet either. People are not going to buy these systems with these strings attached. This is the death of the console market as we speak, if the happens
