Default DA Vets and Techmarine (1st time painting in ages need advice!)

Hello hello, I'm back into painting again after a decade. Please give me as many tips as possible or c&c I believe it's called now?

The Techmarines "chapter" arm was made with spare parts from the DA Vets Sprues, what do you think?

1st of all welcome to heresy, a 10 year break???? lol

Your minis look pretty good but the armour could have a little high lighting, maybe a light drybrush of snot or goblin green.
As far as it goes with he techmarine the skin is a tad to pale.

Yup a 10 year break lol. It was something I did as a kid and enjoyed then rediscovered my old stuff in the loft and decided to have another crack.

Thanks, I'll take that onboard for the highlighting, I'll look up the technique, I think theres one on the GW site. Yeh haha the skins pale because I only had bleached bone which was remotely skin coloured so thats what he got! I'll change that when I get more paints.

Maybe some detail on their robes.
Devlan mud wash is your friend. Works for so many different purposes.

Good start though. Plenty of potential.

All the new washes are must haves for anyone now as they are really top notch for painting up models with a nice finish while not having to spend hours and hours on them. I would also suggest that you thin the paints a bit more as it looks a little clunky in spots. Also, once you are done painting an area such as the robe or the armour, I suggest going back over the areas that are NOT being painted that way with black again to clean up any spills and such. Will make a huge difference in the final look of the model.

one thing I want is the ability to split my fire everywhere, it makes no sense that a squad of 10 guard or marines or whatever all have to fire at 1 target with everything, is the guy with the lascannon not smart enough to realize maybe he would be better off firing at the massive tank looming overhead instead of the little man no bigger than a squat running at him, or is that far too complex for the 10yr olds?
