Simple really, all gloss varnish is is a varnish that has a glossy finish. Matt varnish gives you a flat finish.

You really need a flat finish with mini's as gloss can look blah..

The only thing is, gloss is a much stronger varnish and protects you paintwork a lot better.

I used to use a brand called Dullcote and I sprayed gloss as one coat gloss and then two coats of matt on top. obviously allowing them to dry between coats

It gave you a really strong seal and lovely matt finish. The only problem is it has recently been banned in the EU for being carsiagenic!!!

I am using Vallejo spray gloss and matt now, not as good So if any of you have any suggestions as a good Dulcote replacement I woiuld be very grateful!

They are both used over the model when you have finished painting them.

A matt varnish is normally sprayed over completed models to protect them from wear and tear such as chipping (it wont stop chipping completely) but becareful if/when you use it as its very easy to overdo!

For gloss varnish, this you normally get in pots more often than not. Gives a real shine when applied to a model, not sure about everyone else but i generaly just use this for gems, helmet eyes like that on a marine. Some times its also mixed in with inks for different efffects.

But as always play around with it and see what results you get.

*EDIT* Mart007 posted while i was posting aswell but same answer really, hope all this helps

Yeah, I agree with Warpath about the gems and wotnot. GW do a pot of Ardcoat that I have had for years now and I do all my gems with that! After I sealed them in the way I described above.

as well as being shiny, ardcoat offers much more protection than matt varnish. its usually a good idea to varnish a model with a coat of gloss to make sure it doesnt chip, and then two coats of matte to give it the nice flat finish.

What brand do you use CCCP? I am desperate to find another Dulcote!! Nothing seems to quite give the same finish as that! Damn the EU!
