Pathfinder Assault Team
This is a configuration of units that I have tried a few times in recent games. In one game it absolutely rocked, in another it failed to quite make it off the ground. If other people want to try it, I would like to hear the results.
12 Fire Warriors, Shas'ui, Bonding Knife
4-6 Pathfinders, Shas'ui, Bonding Knife (Keep this unit cheap! 4 Is usually enough)
Devilfish with Disruption, at least 1 Seeker Missile.
All in all, that set comes in around only 300 points or so. But you *do* get an extremely flexible team capable of taking on all kinds of threats. Think of the Pathfinders as being "Dedicated" to the firewarrior team and their devilfish. They can be used to launch missiles at enemy Rhinos and force the passengers to disembark, or improve the Warriors shooting to target foot-based enemies. With 12 shots, focussed BS5 fire will bring down quite a few targets, so long as both units fire at the same target.
Should the enemy somehow close with you, the Fire Warriors can embark on the transport and flee to a better firing position. The Pathfinders, sadly, will mostly be shot to death/butchered. However they will have served their purpose quite nicely, and they were dirt cheap too.
My advice, not that it matters, is to deploy the warriors at the front of your deployment zone, then Scout the devilfish out in front of them. This will ensure that your warriors are sitting just outside 24" range of the enemy, thus Bolters will either have to waste a turn closing with you, or be outranged by Pulse fire. It is also a very good idea to bring at least two of such teams, possibly even 3. The more warrior teams you have, the more you will dominate the fire lanes and the less enemy units that survive to close with you.
Try and tag team them with heavy anti-tank elements in your army, I have no doubt that Landraiders carrying Terminators will be much harder to eliminate than you suspect. XV8's in this army should be geared towards dealing with enemy Heavy Infantry, such as Terminators and Assault Marines. I have found that the Plasma/Fusion suit works wonders. It is of utmost importance that you do *not* forget the resilience of Marine armor!! Even a double Fish of Fury with BS5 is no guarantee against a unit of Terminators.
Thanks very much for reading this, and I would love to hear what you do with this unit in your armies. I am especially interested in what happens when you change wargear around, in what kinds of XV8's you leave nearby, and in how your enemies attempted to counter this set up.
