more movies!

Final Destination 5:
This is actually alright, good even. Visual effects are spectacular, the director works the tension just right, and it's just tongue in cheek enough to skirt the line between taking itself seriously and outright farce.

The boy in the striped Pyjamas: If you can forgive the liberties taken to make this story work (easily done thanks to a wonderful cast and brilliant script), this is a powerful and engaging film. Holds it's weight against schindler's list for movies that will have you staring at the screen long after the credits finish.

Fast & Furious 5: Very, very silly, but good fun.For pretty cars, male bravado and action scenes you can't really go wrong.

I think there may be something wrong with me, I haven't disliked a film for far too long....

Crazy Stupid Love: As a lazy assessment, I'd call this Love Actually Lite. The film deals with love from several angles at all ages, with the familiar interwoven cast of characters. It's funny, clever, believable and at times it's almost heart-warming. It doesn't quite manage to pull off the grand gestures without a hint of cheese slipping in, but this is forgiven for what it adds in great writing and a quality cast with brilliant chemistry.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy: Great film with a sterling cast. It's an impressive feat to make a film where not a lot really happens, but it's interesting, intriguing and exciting for the duration.

Friends with Benefits: Surprisingly good rom com which challenges the cliches whilst embodying them. Refreshing take on the genre, pretty funny and likeable leads with good chemistry.

Killer Elite: A bit too long, and suffers from a promising plot that ultimately goes nowhere. However, as a turn your brain off action film it's not bad at all. Great fights, tough talking and some wonderful moustaches. Not necessarily a cinema must, but something to look out for as a rental.

Drive: Surreal and captivating action film, great performances and very precise direction. Definitely worth a watch.

Red State: Kevin Smith's latest offering is as interesting as it is frustrating with it's genre bending pace changes. Various hits and misses make it good, but never great.

Just finished :

Stargate Atlantis. I thoroughly enjoyed all five seasons of this SG-1 spin-off. The first time I ever tried to watch it, way back when it first hit TV, I watched two episodes and labelled it rubbish, but I now know that was just a knee jerk reaction to finding out SG-1 was close to finishing.

David Hewlett plays Dr McKay in such a paranoid and almost hypochondriac way, you just can't help but laugh at him. And, now more famous for his role in the new Conan film, Jason Momoa really grows as an actor from start to finish.

I'm off to watch Splice now. Just picked it up today because the affore mentioned David Hewlett co-stars. Hope its not a cheap B-movie without any redeeming features - I'll let you know.

"I refuse to prove that I exist," says God, "for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing."

"But," says Man, "the Babel fish is a dead giveaway, isn't it? It could not have evolved by chance. It proves you exist, and so therefore, by your own arguments, you don't. QED."

"Oh dear," says God, "I hadn't thought of that," and promptly vanishes in a puff of logic.
