Default Kung Fu Panda 2

I've watched far too many films recently.

Anyway, I love the first KFP, and was equally impressed by HTTYD, so my expectations were set quite high going in, albeit cautiously.

Overall I wasn't terribly disappointed, but I wasn't that impressed either. The characters still have their charm, but it's very standard sequel fare:

i.e - Main villain has to be tied to hero in mysterious way that expands heroes back story. Culmination of heroes rise to glory in first film is now worthless against new threat etc etc

Whilst these plots are a little bit boring, they are tried and tested, and they do play out quite well. The most annoying thing about them is that they ruin a few of the nicer parts of the first film, which is a shame.

The one surprise is that, for a kids film about a talking panda, it doesn't pull any punches with the darker points of the plot. This was quite refreshing, and it helped to sell the film to the adults.

Overall it's still a good film, just a bit lazy and bloated in places. If your planning to take your younger kids to watch something, this is it. If not i'd wait for dvd/tv.

I am going to have to disagree a little bit here. While I will give you that it felt a little "tried and true" what movie doesn't anymore?

I did enjoy the fact that we got to see more of the personalities of the furious 5, we got to see Po's past, and overall we saw the characters develop more. Usually a 2nd movie tends to be worse, in this case I think we have the "aliens" senerio where we find that the 2nd movie is better than the first.

I also liked that they went "dark" with the story, they made it pretty clear the bad guy was a "real" bad guy who killed and murdered. They didn't try to sugarcoat things, and that kept that edge of "grit" to the story that drew you in.

We are the wolf that stalks
The stars in the sky
And swallows the star-fire
We hide amongst the night
When light is gone
The Light is within us
We run the ruin of Fire
In the darkness
Foes burn in our passing

Quite a few people have said they enjoyed it more than I did, so you wouldn't be alone

I liked that they were in it a fair bit, but I thought it was a shame none of them were expanded on very much - apart from a very minor hint of side plot for tigress.

I'm sure we will be picking it up on DVD so i'll have to see if it grows on me anymore.

Also, Aliens is NOT better than Alien. As good perhaps, but in no way better
