I realise i'm trying to keep this as spoiler free as possible but how important are the rather terrifying people that popped up in the 1st scene to the plot? They were a little bit freaky
Very. But also, if the show follows the book closely, not for some time yet. It was actually one of the things I didn't like about the books as that first scene really sets up something and then it seems to hang unforgotten for a looooooooong time. The other part I didn't like about the books is that Martin has absolutely no trouble killing folks off and usually it is someone who he has invested a ton of time in to get you to identify with them to a degree. You just start to like them and then WHAM they are dead.

one thing I want is the ability to split my fire everywhere, it makes no sense that a squad of 10 guard or marines or whatever all have to fire at 1 target with everything, is the guy with the lascannon not smart enough to realize maybe he would be better off firing at the massive tank looming overhead instead of the little man no bigger than a squat running at him, or is that far too complex for the 10yr olds?

Ah, A Game Of Thrones.

I had only viewed this new series on HBO this morning after discovering that it had been around for about two weeks without my knowing. No time was wasted in investigating. I found the beginning tease amongst the frozen woods to be an excellent taste of things to come, but worry quickly drew that there would be a sea of irrelevances before the show returned to present such interesting topics.

Once something engaging crops up, the show especially tends to interrupt it with a random barrage of tits like every other series around these days... >.>

Anyway, I'll give it a full season before I draw any concrete conclusions about the TV show.

I'm halfway through the book and every sex scene in the show is taken straight from there, so it's not the shows creators to blame.

I haven't read the books, so my understanding of what liberties the show creators have taken are limited. Many of them do serve a purpose, though, which is rare amongst other shows I've come across.

Sex scenes in book are more in detail that you see in series. Many of them are essential to story, we see what these people really are, for example:

- Daenerys and Khal Drogo. They couldnt even speak eachothers languages and we see girl growingup from this immensively
- Tyrion and his whores. He is laughed upon by many of his looks and he actually treats girls nicely.
- Jaime and Cersei. Very essential scene that sets things in motion.

I mean many of you i bet, havent watched much HBO series before. Detailed violence and sex have always been present on this channels series. They are not polished for younger audience. All have been very character driven series were action isnt main point.

For example quite entertaining new Spartacus series. Its very obvious that cartoony violence, cgi blood some sex scenes are the main selling point of this series. Especially when you see some of them in slow motion. Compare this to HBO Rome which had sex and nudity but it was more gritty in everyway possible.

Even slogan for this before was: Sopranos meets Wire.

This is pretty much why I'm not going to bother with the series. I stopped reading halfway through the third book because of how Martin treats his characters. It just started to piss me off too much.

I'm also wondering just how long the show will last when, as those who've read the books will know, a certain character isn't going to last the first season.

I thought it was really good, so many boobies, so little time.

It is said that the guttural sound of Dwarfs bellowing Grungni’s name is enough to make an Elf’s knees knock and a Goblin turn a sickly shade of yellow!

While I have no idea what is going to happen (until amazon delivers anyway) I don't think there is anything wrong with offing established characters SO LONG as there is a good reason and not just for the hell of it.
Good example of that is spooks; they have a horrible tendency to bump off characters but there is always good reasons....upto series 6 anyway (not seen since)

See thats what annoyed me... It did start to feel like he was offing characters just for the hell of having a dramatic plot turn. Yes it was written is as part of the plot, but as said, by the middle of the 3rd book, it just started to feel so unnecessary, and the other characters you were following were treated with such crap...

I've never not finished a book I'd started reading before. Martins have been about the only ones ever I've stopped reading during, and never felt the need or want to go back to.
