Default Akira is getting the live action treatment?

Just having a look through Imdb and found out that a live action version of the classic Anime, Akira, is planned for a 2013 release.
Best of all, the twat from Twilight is going to be playing Tetsuo if rumours are to be believed

I really can't think of a single thing that makes this a good idea, why couldn't they just leave it alone!?!?

Which Twat would that be...those shite productions are full of twat's...my cat has more acting ability!

Akira was THE very first Manga film I ever watched....in fact I still have a copy of it on Video (not that I have a video player anymore ) along with parts 1 and 2 of Urotsukidoji: Legend Of The Overfiend.

Yay! no, Boo! Oh Dammit I'm confused now.

Great to see Manga stuff popping , probably very bad on the film front. I would rather see unknowns fill the roles if I'm honest.

Yes I know the studios feel the need to put big names in productions to secure a bigger box office haul but making fringe stuff mainstream like that always tarnishes it.

Now where have I stashed all those old Manga VHS tapes....................

I always thought that the distinction between the two was Manga are the comics and Anime was the cartoons?
Either way, Akira is a classic and should just be left alone!

Awesome.

While this may seem a terrible thing to say, stay with me here.

While Akira is making a noble sacrifice, that's one less studio and group of actors planning on fucking up Neuromancer or Snow Crash.

Also for the record, if someone DID insist on making either of the aforesaid, Inception has convinced me that it should be Nolan if Del Toro or Rodriguez doesn't want to.

Whilst I love the Akira anime, I honestly wouldn't mind watching a live action version if they did it properly.

I'd never put money on it going well, but since nothing is sacred anymore i'll at least be optomistic.

It could just be my brain misfiring on a Friday evening, but I'm fairly sure I read somewhere last year that Cameron or some similarly high-powered director was considering a live-action version of 'Battle Angel Alita'...

EDIT: it wasn't my brain...

You have, like many other people, hit on a common misconception.

Manga, being the original art form was first published in magazines.
Kanagaki Robun and Kawanabe Kyosai created the first manga magazine in 1874: Eshinbun Nipponchi.

Since then, the evolution of media forced new ideas and with the advent of the 'Moving Picture' it was translated to the screen in attempts to attract those that did not read Books/Comics/Magazines to the art form.

Anime began at the start of the 20th century, when Japanese filmmakers experimented with the animation techniques that were being explored elsewhere in the world.

The basic differences are animation style; Of particular note are the Eyes and Hair.
The hair of Manga characters will have many individual strands animated, eyes are more expressive in Manga also and less oversized.
Anime hair tends to be static blocks of two or three shades of a single colour and the eyes take up the major proportion of the face.

Another one would be that relative frequency of emotions shown 'On Screen'.
Manga's characters were subdued and showed only what was necessary.
Anime's characters show even the tiniest of emotions and sometimes blow them out of all proportion.

As an example: Attraction of a Male character to a Female one;
The Male character in Anime will often be portrayed having a 'Nosebleed' sometimes Niagra Falls in size where as Manga's Male character would merely blush or turn away for a second.
