This is one of those times where I have to ask why do they keep doing this? What success have they had in americanizing movies that makes them think doing it again is a good idea?

I think alot of it is that they can remake them cheaper for the most part since the hard work of script writing and some of the design work has already been done for them.

That said when most remakes never score more then 50% on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, and clock up the highest proportion of Rassies wins... does make you wonder, as the profit return for most of these movies is only around 20% of outlay. Compared to say Dark Knight, which earned 500% and Avatar which earned 1000% return.

I don't think I've ever gone from unbridled anticipation to wretched disappointment so quickly while reading a thread.

Quite a lot really - The Departed, The Ring, Insomnia, Scent of a Woman, The magnificent Seven, Vanilla Sky, Quarantine, A fistful of Dollars, Some like it hot, etc etc

When they're done right, remakes can be amazing, but it needs people who understand and respect the material. The reason we get so many crappy remakes is because the studios are buying things up based purely on the fact they get a script and a vision (as Grizbe said), and usually an existing fanbase.

As for Jaume Collet-Serra, I think he has potential. Orphan and unknown were both flawed yet very watchable in places. If the script is decent and they can actually keep the tone right it might be ok.

Didn't get my meaning across clearly, I should have said americanizing anime not just regular movies. I had speed racer, dragon ball evolution and astro boy in mind.
