Default Best Scifi movies

I remember when District 9 came out I read a review in Metro I think it is. They said the best sci-fi movie since Starwars. Now in a the bar after seeing the movie I asked a mate weather she thought that was a fair appriasal of the Sci-fi genre. Has it really been that long since a properly decent Sci-fi movie.

I know Avatar has since come along. SO for now Avatar is the bench mark. But prior to that I struggled to think of more that a hand full of SF movies that gained wide spread acclaim. I think Bladerunner and the Alien franchise did well after their releases.

I think that is a sorry thing. Even now movies and TV series that come out aren't put into the SF genre recently the BBC produced a series called Outcasts, This was never once referred to as SF even though the first shot was a space ship orbiting a planet called Carpathia I ask 'How is that not SF?!'

Anyway, rant over now for my previous question before District 9 and latterly Avatar can you name a 'decent' SF movie. Other than Bladerunner and The Alien Franchise'.

The newest reboot of the Star Trek franchise was fucking awesome as well. I might also be one of the few that really liked Battle: Los Angeles but I would say it was cool.

Battlestar Galactica, while not a movie, was incredibly cool too.

one thing I want is the ability to split my fire everywhere, it makes no sense that a squad of 10 guard or marines or whatever all have to fire at 1 target with everything, is the guy with the lascannon not smart enough to realize maybe he would be better off firing at the massive tank looming overhead instead of the little man no bigger than a squat running at him, or is that far too complex for the 10yr olds?

Wraithlord you read my mind. The new Star Trek was so good I think, because I expected it to suck balls. Battlestar Gallactica, while a series was pretty fantastic as well. Would Stargate be considered Sci Fi??? I'm not sure when it came out or what, but I thought movie was pretty decent (not all the shit that has since come out, just the original Kurt Russell flick).

The new predator movie.. Predators was pretty good. Its actually almost a renewing of the Predator franchise.

Plus the new movie Battle: Los Angeles was fucking awesome.

Stargate was indeed Sci-fi, The new trek movie was a awesome take on the alternate universal idea and I did enjoy it.

I think it is sad that SF doesn't get the same respect as the other genres, I have long since given up that SF and fantasy won't get that respect because of a misconception that only 'nerds and geeks' will be interested and lets face it we're a very niche market!

I have to agree... not a Trek fan but that movie was pretty bad ass. I also liked Tron. Give me all the hate you want but that was kiss ass to me. Can Space Balls count? LOL

Hmmm....Terminator 1/2, Eternal sunshine, The matrix, Jurassic Park, Brazil, Inception, Firefly (there's probably a shed load of TV series i haven't seen too), Pitch Black, Children of Men, The Fly, The Thing.....

There's tons, but hardly anyone markets as 'sci-fi' because of the stigma. The last Star Trek Film under any other name would have been received as an amazing action film (which it was), but I still overheard people who weren't going to watch it because star trek is for nerds....

The Thing... was surprisingly good. It look like shit. Especially with such a title. But it was some scary shit. Makes you think twice about playing in the snow.

I agree with all the movies mentioned so far (except for Star Trek), so I'll add Pandorum to the list. Really nice little Sci-Fi horror movie that actually surprised me. If you haven't seen it, go check it out.
