Some good films there, I agree with all of them but I wouldn't agree with Avatar. Interesting concept but a poor script and plot, hiding it with the biggest budget in history doesn't make it a good all round film. I was bored about 20 minutes in and my boredom didn't let up till the credits.
I felt like I'd already seen this cartoon style of film when I saw Star Wars Episode 2.

3D doesn't work either, I don't care who made it or what budget it had.
It didn't work with Jaws 3 (and a few others) way back in the 80s and it doesn't work today. It's just a ploy to get people who didn't realise 3D didn't work 30 years ago to spend their money this time round.

Which brings me to Star Wars.
Eps 4, 5 & 6 are the benchmark for how a good sci-fi space and aliens film should be structured.
Eps 1, 2 & 3 were just a rushed cash in with a budget behind them with Lucas ignoring valuable plot points from the originals. Luke and Leia seperated at birth AND from their mother at the same time. According to Leia, she remembers her mum vaguely. Vader's beginning? Different to what Old Ben told Luke.
Ok I enjoyed eps 1 & 3, I despised ep 2. Out of the new ones, episode 3 is certainly the best and nearly made it onto my list below, but not quite.
There's a few more plot holes and circumstantial changes but I can't remember unless I watch the DVDs.
Sorry Lucas, bad form.

I'm surprised nobody has said Cloverfield. Pretty good I thought for a Blair Witch style sci fi. Though the homemade video style has been done to death since Blair Witch.

My all time fave Sci-Fi movies, only a few of them:
Carpenter's The Thing. (not looking forward to the remake this year)
Alien 1, 2 & 3. (not Resurrection, utter toss)
Robocop. (not 2, 3, 4, etc. ugh)
Predator. (2 & 'ors werent bad but don't make the list)
Jurassic Park. (2 wasn't bad, 3 was shite)
Starship Troopers. (2, 3, 4, etc were shite also)
Abrams Star Trek. (nice reboot for the series)
All original Star Trek movies. ('nuff said)
Star Wars 4, 5, 6. ('nuff said)

Event Horizon is how I perceive the effects of the warp in W40k, great film.

Hmm, from top of head and in no order:

Starship Troopers (1 and 3)
Pandorum
Alien, Aliens
The original Predator films
Thing
Serenity
Fifth Element (a guilty pleasure lol)
Terminator
Robocop
Escape from New York
Star Wars (original 3)
Star Trek (New and 2)

TV Shows:

V original, V remake
Firefly
Space Above and Beyond
TNG
DS9
Lexx (another guilty pleasure)

I may forget some but these are what come to mind

There are quite a few here that I cannot stand. And many that are indeed awesome.
Screamers is one of my all time favourite movies and surely deserves an honourable mention.
And as usual I am faced with the dilemma of what is/isnt a sci fi movie. Are we talking subject matter or setting. Is it in space/other planets, or does it just need the science based fictional story line?
Using the generic everything goes scifi category, i will throw in the following as recomended movies for your enjoyment.
The abyss
Deep rising
Biggles adventures in time
Krull ( to me its on another planet featuring invading/occupying aliens, not fantasy)
Cocoon 1&2
Red planet
total recall
Space hunter
Battle for terra
9

Im sure if I had time to think, I could come up with a few more of note. But that should queue up someones download list for a day or two
Some of them may be old as sin with bad fx, but they are well worth watching.

I liked "Outland" myself, Sean Connery in a space version of high noon, and what about the Running Man, Arnie at his 80s best!!
