Default Rango

Took my little boy to see this today, and it was quite a strange experience....mostly as I think I enjoyed it more than he did.

By all accounts, Rango is an animated western with a few comic turns that seems to pander more towards the adult market than children. The protagonist is an adult, there's no 'kid(s) along for the ride, and a lot of the jokes will go way over the heads of anyone under 14....there's even a fear and loathing reference in it.

The basic plot follows a lonely domesticated chameleon with Thespian tendencies as he is thrown from his terrarium into the desert. There he finds his way to a small wild west settlement in the brink of a water crisis. Relying on his acting chops, he re-invents himself with tall tales, and a mean demeanour into Rango, ace gunslinger, who is soon appointed the new town sheriff.

The rest of the film plays out like any western I'd watch on a sunday afternoon, with some lovely set pieces and very well defined heroes and villains. The film also drifts occasionally into surreal flashbacks and dreamscapes as our hero ponders his purpose in life.

The animation is really very good, and Depp is on fine form as he indulges his more lively side.

I'm still a bit weirded out by this film, most likely as it was nothing close to what I expected. However I was certainly entertained, and would definitely recommend it if you have the chance.

hmm good review and yes i've been tempted by the little lizard....and I don't have kids

me and my partner go to the cinema every week and have exprienced our fair share of crap! but i've been put off rango because of "gnomeo and juliet".....JESUS!!! I was expected a shrek type experience and instead got a 2011 bambi, steer clear 1 funny moment in the whole film it's for kids only no adult humour snuck in there at all whilst entertaining it's definately not worth a look.

I've seen large chunks of Gnomeo and you don't have to worry, they are cut of very different cloth.

I went to see this on Monday and have to say its a pretty good film.

Some great characters and the animation is probably the best Ive seen. Depp defenitly has a stand out performance. Its a bit under te radr this one as there has not really been as much hype as you would normally get for a full CGI film.

And the best part fo the film? I cant really say without a spoiler button.

Defenitly worth seeing.

Your toast has been burnt and no amount of scraping will get rid of the black bits.
