Default The Town

After Ben Affleck's magnificent directing debut 'Gone Baby Gone', he is now trying his hand at something bigger (in a Hollywood sense) with The Town.

Just got in from watching it, and I'm glad to say it delivers on every level.
If you've seen a few heist movies, you won't see anything new here - it's tried and tested stuff that walks on very familiar pavements. The heists however are not the focus of the film, but that's not to say they aren't extremely well shot, suspenseful and thrilling.

The main focus of the film is the characters involved in the story, the lives they lead, and the experiences which shape their decisions and actions.

With such a sharp focus on the characters, the acting really needs to be up to par, and the cast doesn't disappoint. Renner, Postlethwaite, Hamm and Hall turn in excellent performances, only topped by Affleck himself on terrific form.

The emotional scenes err the line slightly, occasionally treading a little close to sappy, but overall this is a very good 'by the numbers' heist film, encompassing excellent characters, storytelling, acting and directing.

Well worth your pennies.

I thought it tapered off waaaay too much at the end, really. 'The Departed' kept cropping up as a comparison, which probably had me biased against this movie from the beginning, as in my estimation it would take rather a lot to top that movie.
