It was awesome! I didn't even look at my watch once!

While I agree that some of the plot was a bit predictable, the visuals MORE than made up for it. It was well worth the ticket.

Current Record: 4/10/2 w/l/d
I don't mind losing, it's fun either way!

Games I play: Warhammer 40k, Magic The Gathering, Pokemon TCG, Pirates CSG, Other random video games and TCGs.

I watched a HD DVD rip of this a few days ago and thought it was awful. There was nothing special about it, the plot was boring as where the characters.
Then all my friends complained that I had to watch it 3d. So I went to the IMAX and watched it.
I only watched about 30 mins of it, yes the effects where better on the big screen but that still did not stop the story and characters sucking.
CGI is good but I cant just watch CGI.
I give it a 2.5/5 with out the CGI it would be another bland Sci film nobody would remember.
I caught a interview with the some of the cast that said that this movie is an even bigger breakthough in film that when they added colour, not sure I believe that.
Will have to see what people do with cameron's new tech. As a show case for this new CGI it was good but as a film rubbish.

I have seen it twice now and it easily comes out as one of my favourite movies ever. Yes the plot is a bit old hat but that kind of story has been told and retold for ages and ages, before movies were even a thought in the back of someones mind. I don't mind a different take on a proven formula. The effects, especially the 3D effects are absolutely stunning, and are most definitely a future influence on all movies to come now.

one thing I want is the ability to split my fire everywhere, it makes no sense that a squad of 10 guard or marines or whatever all have to fire at 1 target with everything, is the guy with the lascannon not smart enough to realize maybe he would be better off firing at the massive tank looming overhead instead of the little man no bigger than a squat running at him, or is that far too complex for the 10yr olds?

From the trailer, it seemed to be a very cliche plotline.

Native American Aliens live on shiny rock.

American humans ask Aliens to move off shiny rock.

Aliens refuse.

Americans send in a spy person to get them to change their minds about moving.

Spy meets girl, falls in love, questions ethicality of America.

Superiors don't like that, and invade anyway.

Spy sides with natives, natives win in a large set-piece battle. Cue credits.

Apart from the CGI, is there anything to make this film stand out? Or is it just like Toy Story all over again (barring the originality)?

90% of people think they are above average.

Statistically Improbable. Psychologically Inevitable.

I liked the Colonel. The single most badass dude I've seen on screen for a while!

if you would have watched the movie already i would say:
thank you. that sums it up pretty nicely.

so yes, your anticipation is 100% correct.

oh my god is this story fucking pathetic... truly it made me sick to watch at some points. american movies just follow the same scheme over and over and over and over again.. horribly stereotype. it ruined everything. why couldn't cameron just keep the pitiful attempt of kids morality out of it? the whole thing is practically soaking with it. could have been a nice sci-fi strip otherwise.
though the animations were smooth and a definite eyecatcher, they couldn't redeem the awful story..

Actually, the way I've heard it told is that it's good despite being cliche as hell, I don't know, seeing as I haven't seen it, but I probably will soon. I'm keeping my expectations neutral to keep backlash away, and hopefully I'll have a good time.

sethis & graf

seriously if thats all you walk away with from watching this film then i feel for you, i think breaking down avatar into a few sentances would be as an accurate description as describing star wars a new hope as "a story of an old man grooming a farm boy, only to get his tits kicked in by the farm boys dad at his office, boy has feelings for strange old man and blows up dads office"

almost all movies, books and tv are cliche, very few things are original, but personally i think Jim cameron has taken a nice cliched plot slapped it with some sci-fi magic and some ground breaking movie making and churned out a damn fine movie. On a side note i also belive that this movie will cement 3D movie veiwing rather than it being a fad like it was back in the 80s.

i am disappointed by the potentials this movie had being thrown away this mindlessly. i was really looking forward to see this movie. actually fevering for it. but discovering cameron shamelessly stole the baselinestory from the old rpg albion and pushing it into the stereotype cliche with all force just made me sad.
yes, the effects were stunning and it will cement 3d movies but the story is still sickenly pathetic.
