Default Inglorious Basterds

Well, it finally came out, and I went to see it. I liked it, but it certainly wasn't what I was expecting. I was suprised by how little the Basterds themselves were in the film, and how half the squad is completely written off and forgotten by the end of the movie. I also thought that "Story A and Story B" didn't really gel together all that well, like something else was missing.

However, it wasn't nearly as violent as I'd feared. I'm not into "Torture Porn" movies like Hostel, and since Eli Roth was in it, I had feared that IB would venture into this direction. I was glad to see that it did not.

I thought the opening scene and dialogue where we are first intorduced to Hans Landa was freaking awesome, though. I really liked the clever use of language for the audience's benefit, and the storyline reason for the switches. In fact, I thought Christopher Waltz's entire performance as Landa was incredible. I hope he gets an Oscar nod or something for it.

I also thought the climax of the film

Oh, and I was pleasantly suprised by the cameos of a couple of Tarantino's staples.

Another movie that I'm glad I saw on the big screen. Has anyone else seen it? What are your thoughts?

I've always wanted to see this movie, but just like you, I'm not into "torture porn" either...so what would you rate this movie as from 1-10 (1 being little blood and killing and 10 being X-rated torture and killing)?

It shows them doing it, but it's mostly happening in the background, and not focused on.

And GWmaniac, that's a tough rating to make. it IS still a WW2 film, and it is still Tarantino, so the violence and killing is definitely there, it's just not always front and center. There's some gunfights, and some other assorted physical violence, and something else. I guess under your system, maybe a 4 or 5? There's violence, but not really a lot physical torture.

The only exception I can recall is: (Minor spoiler)

I thought it was great but the main reason i thought this was Landa. He was frickin awesome deffo the best charactor in the film, his lines were brill and i just thought he pulled it off really well. Everytime he was in a scene i just sat there thinking what crazy thing is he going to do next lol.

i thought brad pitt's character was hilarious, although he wasnt at all what i expected. the whole script was beautifully written and executed though, it was surprising how much of the action and comedy in the film stemmed from the "talkie" scenes rather than the action.

Just saw it today, and on the whole I was impressed. The middle drags a little bit, but is more than made up for by the performances of Pitt and Waltz as Landa. The violence is actually quite minimal when you consider the involvement of Tarantino and Roth, with only a couple of close up gory bits. The script is also very sharp. I'd have liked to have seen more of the Basterds in action, but on the whole they actually seemed to play a secondary role to the supposed subplot.

I'd give it an 8/10.
