saving private ryan was good, loved enemy at the gates more though, Apocalypse now. one word. wow. That is the best helicopter raid scene I have ever seen.
Did anyone like Jarhead? cos It's really hard to class it as a true war film cause there's not a single firefight if I remember right. Just a tiny bit of sniping.

Seconded. How the hell DID you forget Gallipoli? I can't watch it without tears rolling down my face.

I'll also put in a good word for Das Boot, Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket.

I didn't read the rest of the lists I'm afraid, so apologies if there's been a mention of it that I've missed, but in my opinion, the best war film I've seen is A Bridge Too Far. Especially the bit where the Para gets gunned down trying to recue some hats, it's poignant and gets over the futility of it all perfectly.

What a depressing thread. Nuff-

:cyclops going to do something more cheerful:

EDIT: I didn't, I went back to read the bits I'd missed; good call, Stella.

Very true. The Eagle Has Landed is second. Zulu, The Longest Day, A Bridge Too Far, Von Ryan's Express, Merryll's Marauders, Braveheart, Das Boot, Bridge Over The River Quai, The Guns Of Navarone, The Battle of Britain and Where Eagles Dare are all excellent as well. The old WWII films are much better than any of the stuff coming out these days.

Hornblower series?

'Das Boot', and 'Cruel Sea' are the only other sea movies (specifically) I can think of. Films like Behind Enemy Lines and Pearl Harbour involve sea fighting, but obviously, they're both about Planes/Man down fighting on the ground etc.
