Yeah gotta love U-571...
Talking about Americans winning the war for us... the film is based on HMS Bulldog's capture of an enigma machine on May 9th, 1941 (film should be called U-110)... a full 3 years before America managed the same.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U-571_(...torical_events
to read more about it- it got mentioned in the House of Parliament as a national affront

My favorite war films are all from the books of Alistair MacLean:
Where Eagles Dare
Guns of Navarone

... incidently the worst film ever made was also from one of his books (a spectacular book btw): Fear is the Key

No no no... all pale before "The Dirty Dozen" talk about penal legionaires eh!

Dearth, Horget, Chasarith, Pandemonium & Arkuus
Don't be afraid, they only want to nibble on your soul.
Some say forget carapace armor, it's not worth it, take more men instead... that is until they're the ones on the front line facing down the buisness end of a bolter.

Another good film is behind enemy lines. The scene where the colonel steps on the mine, and the sniper just leaves him is so funny, yet I know I shouldn't laugh...

Here's a challenge, try and find an American made film where the main character/s never say "Godammit!"

Enemy at the Gates was good but the ending was sh#t. The real ending of Major Konig was much better and I cannot understand why they did not use it?
Downfall... awesome
Cross of Iron (of course)
Zulu
Kingdom of Heaven... great, but Legolas did not cut a very heroic Knight and his speech to the troops did not inspire me!
Full Metal Jacket.... filmed at Beckton gasworks in the heart of London!!!
Master and Commander
Saving Private Ryan... and thank God for the Yanks. If they had not single-handedly taken Normandy all by themselves, the war would have dragged on and on...

Worst war film of all time: The Battle of the Bulge. The Ardennes '44, lots of trees and snow but in the film... open desert and grasslands and 30 degrees... total b#llox!
Most distorted view of history film: U571... whatever-its-name-was. The Enigma machine captured by the yanks who were not even in the war at the time, an insult to the Brits who actually pulled it off

I reasonable film but not GREAT! Didn't the Mobile Infantry look suspiciously like Imperial Guard? Oh, and I loved the Navy uniforms... seen them before somewhere (WW2 assault gun tunics??)
