Actually, he can't just wear a suit and tie. Superman's costume is actually made from blankets sent in his ship as a baby. They are spun from a kryptonian material that gets stronger just like Superman does in our sunlight. It's the only thing he could fly in that wouldn't tear off him at super sonic speeds.
Like most comic lore, it depends on whose writing. That theory was the original I believe, but some stories say it isn't the fabric but the field that gives him his strength and invulnerability which extends outward onto his clothes. Pretty sure the concept was brought up because of the shit load of super clones and alternate dimension super people who could move at comparable speeds without the kyrptonian tights. Hell superboy is in a t-shirt and jeans. I'm sorry but the only reason why they keep the costume is to please comic book fans. Of course I'm still gonna see the movie but I'll probably shake my head when he first dons the spandex.
