His suit has a practical use. It provides protection and has gadgets and all that. It is a bit ridiculous but it isn't to much a suspension of disbelief that someone might go out in public with something similar to it, assuming they worked out the kinks. Superman is invulnerable to damn near everything and his suit does nothing to hide his identity. He could just as easily wear a suit and tie and have it function the same way. Why wear spandex?

I really hope this happens. The only superman comics i seem to enjoy are the ones where he isn't really superman at all (like Secret Identity).

Or when he guest stars in another DC comic as a massive douchebag. Somehow i can't see them going with the douchebag route.

Actually, he can't just wear a suit and tie. Superman's costume is actually made from blankets sent in his ship as a baby. They are spun from a kryptonian material that gets stronger just like Superman does in our sunlight. It's the only thing he could fly in that wouldn't tear off him at super sonic speeds.

Like most comic lore, it depends on whose writing. That theory was the original I believe, but some stories say it isn't the fabric but the field that gives him his strength and invulnerability which extends outward onto his clothes. Pretty sure the concept was brought up because of the shit load of super clones and alternate dimension super people who could move at comparable speeds without the kyrptonian tights. Hell superboy is in a t-shirt and jeans. I'm sorry but the only reason why they keep the costume is to please comic book fans. Of course I'm still gonna see the movie but I'll probably shake my head when he first dons the spandex.
