AvP was such a disappointment. I'm a fan of both franchises (hell, I even think Alien 3 was a great film) but the first AvP was so awful it left me with absolutely no desire to watch the sequel. The female lead (can't be arsed to remember her name) was lifted from an AvP novel, right down to being marked with acid blood. I felt that they were trying to create a new Ripley character, but I maintain that you can't have another Ripley because part of her uniqueness was the lack of strong, female leads at that time. When Alien came out, the purpose of women in slasher films (Alien is basically a slasher film in space) was to 1.) have sex with someone, 2.) lose some articles of clothing and 3.) either die screaming or be rescued by the male lead. Dallas and Parker dieing was surprising to the original audience because they were the obvious strong male leads. Ripley was a bit of a bitch. She also wasn't painted from the beginning as 'the survivor'. By the end, she's cracking up. Since then, we've had plenty of strong female lead characters, so it's not unique.
