Default Avengers, Assemble!

Before we start, if you are intending to watch this regardless of reviews, just don't read any further (pssst - there is a scene in the middle of the credits).

I tried (mostly in vain) to keep my expectations low for this, so i don't want to get anyone too excited before they see it.

If you need convincing however, please read on

Avengers is awesome. Without any hyperbole, awesome is the perfect word to describe this film. It's well scripted, well acted, well directed, and all the parts fit perfectly into the puzzle of what a perfect blockbuster should be.

The plot and the characters aren't going to change your life, and they don't want to. There's no soul searching or profound sentimentality; just pure entertainment start to finish. This, combined with the previous films, also means there's no real need for any back story or supporting characters and 95% of the runtime is devoted to advancing the plot. The pacing is effortless.

3D was similar to Captain America. It's not terrible but it's not necessary. The pure spectacle of the final battle is jaw dropping though, and that might just warrant the upgrade to 3D based on that alone.

The feeling you get after you leave a film is always a good way to judge it, and it's been a long time since i left a screen absolutely buzzing. I genuinely considered watching it again today, and i probably would have given the chance.

5 stars and all that malarkey, definitely worth a watch!

I've heard nothing but 'it's awesome' from people I know who have seen it so far. I'm definitely looking forward to going to see it next week sometime now.

Regards,
Jake.

Awesome, I'm going to do my best to see this at the weekend. I know at least 15 of my friends are planning on seeing it tonight, so I'll wait and see their reactions. I also need to see Thor and Captain America as soon as I can, though. I've heard nothing but positive reviews for this thing, apart from a rather average review on The Guardian (at least, I think it is the Guardian).

I loved this one.

Hulk steals the show easily, despite only featuring for two parts of the movie. Tony Stark runs a close second.

Favourite dialogue:

Nonsense is our Salvation

You know how Marvel Superhero movies always have the following?

1. Mediocre laughs, rising to good ones occasionally
2. Good action scenes
3. Cardboard cutout romances
4. "Meh" backstories

The Avengers make 1 and 2 AMAZING instead of mediocre-to-good, and disposes of 3 and 4 entirely. A huge step up in script quality is owed almost entirely to Joss Whedon, so if you liked the jokes in Firefly/Serenity, you'll love this.

My only real complaints are, first, that the start of the movie was very dark (visually), combined with 3D glasses it made it very hard to see what was happening for the first few minutes of the film. Will not be a problem at home or if sat close to the screen.

Go see it, or buy the DVD. Or both. One of the top 3 Marvel films. Extremely good.

90% of people think they are above average.

Statistically Improbable. Psychologically Inevitable.

@sethis - might want a spoiler tag in there

Totally agree on your first point. They definitely got the pacing spot on this time.

I didn't really notice the darkness that much, but i was watching it on a 4k projector with a fairly huge screen. Having seen the 2D now i'd probably just say skip the 3D entirely if you can, it doesn't add anything.
