Default The Artist

I can't believe there is no thread on Heresy about the Oscar winner for best picture - The Artist.

I know the Oscars are very overrated and mean exactly jack sh*t, but this really is a great movie that is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.

I recently saw it and thoroughly enjoyed it, so I can honestly recommend it to you all. Have any other Heresy memebers seen it and indeed, what are your thoughts?

I could try and explain what its about, but why not watch and enjoy the trailer and a nice clip? Enjoy!!!

I think this type of film isnt really heresy members bag, its an arty "Oscar" movie, no doubt the industry was fawning all over it because its (mostly)silent and black and white and as a bit of a nod to movie making history from days gone by, but im not sure it is deserving of the praise its got, i didnt really enjoy it, though it was a refreshing to see something like that in the cinema and is better than some of the crap that hollywood can churn out.

Peronally i dont think that the lead actor deserved the oscar, yes he was convincing as a silent star but without doubt the oscar should have gone to Garry Oldman, but having a brit win two years in a row would never happen.

Also for the life of me i cant understand why Rise of the planet of the apes didnt get visual effects????

I thought it was a great film to watch, and it was a proper 'cinema' experience. Probably the first thing since Avatar which I would have totally regretted not watching on the big screen. I think that's partly due to the fact that they just don't make films like this anymore, and it was really refreshing and fun to watch. Whether that should make it 'best picture' worthy is debatable, but personally I think there were better films nominated this year.

I feel best actor was deserved though. Jean Dujardin was faultless and effortlessly charismatic throughout. The success and charm of the film is hugely weighted on his performance.

I'm still in 2 minds about 'The Artist', it was obviously beautifully done but it was so far outside my normal 'comfort zone' movie-wise I wasn't even sure how to feel about it. And it felt a bit deliberately reverential, almost as though it was calculated to make old-school Hollywood types go "oh yes, look how great things were Back In The Day."

I definitely think Rooney Mara should have won Best Actress for 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' though, I thought she was just fucking mesmerising as Lisbet Salander in that.
